I would like to know this as want to stock some up ready for holiday next year.

Cheers,
Simon.

We go ours from the post office when we went in May,

We are going back to Floirda in Janurary so will also be getting some more soon from the PO.

Most places are commision free, so what ever you don't lose, you can exchange again.

I was going to suggest checking the Post Office, maybe they are reasonable with their rates.

FASTER MIKE!! 31 October 2004 12:57 PM

if you go to post office that does "on demand" you can get it there and then commision free. its usually the crown offices.

mike:)

Is that the front door to your house

Crikey things are looking up in Parr now with the new housing re-development schemes :D :D :D

Ian_S 01 November 2004 10:00 AM

any other suggestions? i also need some

Depends how much you want.

I've used www.onlinefx.co.uk before and have always been impressed. Their current rate is 1.7791 - but they charge a £3.95 delivery fee.

Alternatively, have a look at www.currency-express.com. Their rate is a bit lower (1.759) - but free delivery.

Less than £350 = currency-express
Over £350 = onlinefx

travel shops in liverpool are doing them for 1.77

hsbc in liverpool (dale street) is doing them for 1.78 commision free

I converted some GBP to USD last week at 1.82 with www.xetrade.com

Don't how you'd use them for holiday cash, but for significant amounts it's well worth the effort of setting up an account with them.

class_A 26 November 2004 07:18 AM

Dollar hit new lows against the Euro yesterday and a four year low against the yen. Time to get a bigger suitcase :D Onlinefx £1 = $1.84

darlodge 26 November 2004 10:19 AM

$1.84 Bring it on, I'm back on in the US in Jan so I'll be buying some at that price.

We take minimum amount of cash these days

Get a credit card from Nationwide, they do not charge anything extra for using the card abroad. The exchage rate you get is always at least three points over what you can exchange for cash.

You can also use the card in cash dispensers in the US

Currently at 1.8674 thru OnlineFX, any better deals out there? I'm off to NYC in 2 weeks so I'm looking to order some currency within the next few days. Any evidence that we're likely to see the tourist rates hit $1.90 in the near future?

Unfortunately my CC issuer charges 2% commission on all foreign transactions. I'll have to do some sums and see where it becomes economical due to the better exchange rates offered.

Also, anyone got any tips on avoiding state sales tax? I figured that if I could prove I lived out of state (e.g. UK driving license, utility bill) I would be able to avoid paying this

Cheers!
Alex

For sales tax, if you go to places like Macys they give you a card for free which gives you a discount to the equvalent of sales tax. Other places have desks you can go to to claim the money back.

This is NY experience.

Marks & Spencers  apparently are the place with the best tourist rates, according to FX guys I spoke to today, whilst checking this out for pending NZ trip...

Maybe worth a look

I've just a quick look. M&S's $ rates are certainly good (1.86), but onlinefx still have a slight edge at 1.8674.

M&S charge £5 for delivery for orders under £500, otherwise it's free. Onlinefx charge £3.75 for delivery (regardless of amount).

So for less than £500 onlinefx will be the better of the 2 - but M&S for £500+

quicksprint 03 December 2004 01:27 PM

We always get ours from Intercash.....got a good deal last week and hopefully will be getting a better one to-day(getting them in ready for next years sunny jaunt).

I wouldn't think these good (for us) rates are going to last....only time will tell.

That holiday home is getting even more tempting ;);)
