new computer screen, no budget, poor eyesight

What in your opinion is the best screen solution, for a friend who has fairly poor eyesight.

He can afford just about anything (his DB9 arrives in March!) and wants something big and flat.

He considered a Plasma, but thanks to you guys on Scoobynet, I've managed to disuade him.

The trouble I find with a TFT screen is that you have to run it at a fixed resolution to get the best results, so I'm loathe to recommend a big TFT only to find he has to run it at 1600x1200 and all the fonts are tiny for him.

Any ideas ?

Any decent TFT screen should be able to run in a variety of resolutions upto its maximum.

If he's loaded get him to buy one of the Apple Displays as they are the best out there at present but at a price. Plenty of other good ones out there also.

Does his machine have a DVI output of just VGA ?

There's a 'large fonts' option in windows. Look through the 'Accessibility Options' in Control panel.

Incidentally, high resolutions may be counter productive if the chap has poor eyesight. 800x600 on a a normal screen will be easy to read. I'd go for 1024x768 if he gets a big screen. All depends on his eyesight of course.

What type of poor eyesight does he have? Should he really be driving? ;) I'll drive his car for him if not since that's the type of good natured chap I am ;) :D

We have a few users at work who are virtually blind, the worst use magic or zoomtext combined with a braille reader in some cases.
Most use something like a 21'' CRT monitor in 640x480 or 800x600 I'm not sure if big TFT's will support that low a resolution.

Thanks chaps. I'll have a look at that Apple display.

So if I got him a 21" TFT, you reckon I could run that happily at 1024x768 (that'll keep everything nice and big for him on a 21" screen).

I ask as my 2 TFT's don't look anywhere near as sharp unless I run them at their native 1280x1024. Both are good quality TFT's in excess of £300 each.

As for DVI - I'll get him a video card that supports it - by far better picture quality than VGA DSUB

Yeah that can often be an issue with larger tft screens, U be best to check the specs...

Not being funny but if its just a matter of being able to see it, rather then needing the work space.. I would go for something cheaper and run it 800x600 (lets face it, if ur eyes are burning out, ur not going to get the benefit from a high quality screen)

Another vote for TFTs looking poor in anything other than their 'native' resolution.

A CRT will give the most flexability at the expense of desk space.

Heh, let me clarify something - when I say he's got bad eyesight, I mean the bugger is too lazy to get spectacles! He's just having difficulting coming to terms with middle-age!

Besides, I would offer to chauffeur him in the DB9!
