Pleased to hear it Andy. :) I'm concerned that when/if i remove the step in the up-pipe flange it will end up larger than the turbine inlet. Is there any reason why i shouldn't work the turbine inlet out to match the up-pipe?

I bought one 30 and one 15 metre roll. 15 metres did pipes 2-4. I started on the 30 metre roll for pipe #1 and the up-pipe. Hopefully there'll be enough left over to do the downpipe and perhaps the turbo if it looks feasible.

Looking good Carl :D.

I don't see a reason why you shouldn't port out the turbine inlet, i know of a few people that have done this.

Tony.

Happy memories...
The paint doesn't dry in cool air, it needs to be 'baked' good and hot.
When you install the pipes wear more gloves as the paint will be everywhere too.

How come Flats done 20K's of responses?
Did (does) he live on this Forum?
It's killed me doing 2.5K.

Oh no ! not another gassing session ahead :D If I die early due to toxic poisoning I'm going to sue all you guys with new header wrap :D

No problem matching the turbo inlet to the uppipe, ideally you don't want too many changes in diameter though, I'm a fan of small bore uppipes personally :)

Carl - the Cooltek stuff will not really be too good on the Turbo tbh.

Might be better getting one of the turbo wraps that Agriemach sell (20% off, remember!)

that what I am doing with reference to the GT30R-10 that going on the car in the next few weeks:D

Russell

Carl Davey 07 March 2005 08:36 AM

Hey Russ. :) Aye it's a little bit thin. :( I was thinking of just using the remainder of the wrap on the turbo, so double or even triple wrapping it. With the locking wire it should be reasonably secure.

I have one final 'trick' that will be using up anything that was left of my 'budget'. So Agriemach ain't getting £80 off me for a turbo bag.

WUZ 07 March 2005 11:04 AM

You could always make up another heat shield out of straight aluminuim and put a 120 degree curve in it, wrap it and fit to the OE mounting plate for the OE heat shield?

I'm currently designing something to do that at the moment!

Russell - due home on Thursday!

Carl Davey 07 March 2005 12:42 PM

The TD04 heatshield fits over the TD05, not brilliantly but it fits. I'll be refitting that anyway on top of any wrap i add. I have 3.5 days left of working on the car, if i had time i'd look at doing a custom shield. Right now it seems a luxury time doesn't afford me. :(

911 07 March 2005 12:47 PM

I'm not sure if a 'turbo bag' will get around a TD with freedom to the actuator rod etc in a neat/sealed way and allow the tin shield back on.
Graham.

Carl Davey 07 March 2005 12:51 PM

That's another concern of mine Graham. I'm not convinced it wouldn't be £80 wasted...

I'm feeling lazy so hopefully someone can help me with this one... Crankcase and camshaft breathers. What's usually done with these? I know most route them to a catch can - i was thinking more along the lines of the tarmac (for ease). Any tips, tricks and advice?

flat4 07 March 2005 03:06 PM

deja vous :lol1: i think we should merge our threads together, make easier reading :D

i routed mine all individually down to ground, checked the turbo hose when i took it off this weekend, not a spot of oil inside :thumb:

Welloilbeefhooked 07 March 2005 03:46 PM

Carl,

Do you know how much of a difference there is in the turbo inlet compared to the up-pipe once machined?

Ive got a VF22 that should already be ported (by Zerosports) although I dont know to what size and I was wondering the same as you regarding opening up the up-pipe flange. I dont want to open the flange until I know. Any ideas what size the unported VF22 is?

Also, the 40mm opening into the header ports looks smaller than the standard ones. Do you know how well they match up as I dont see alot of room for opening them out?

Cheers,

Wayne.

Mine (breathers) are piped across the back of the engine bay, down the bulkhead at the N/S to a couple of K+N filters too.....

Mine 'drain' into a catch for the motorsport rule. I was thinking of using the carbon container as a catch but the pipe routing would be far more tortuous.
Graham.

Peanuts 07 March 2005 07:08 PM

will everyone who is not "tied" by motorsport rules just pipe the breathers down to the road via the shortest possible route.

for the sake of the children please

Give up the name "Peanuts". Rename yourself "Tony Man of the People!"

I hope you've got broadband...

I'm getting good at taking this off. :)

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02228.jpg

And this.

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02230.jpg

With undertray removed i realise some of the heatshields have to be removed before i can get the OE headers off.

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02234.jpg

And while i was doing that Dad smoothed the flow into the turbo a little. This was around 10mm in dia smaller the the up-pipe outlet.

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02235.jpg

Wayne, the outlet from the Megan upipe is circa 52mm, even though there is a mild step caused by the flange the actual outlet matches the gasket perfectly. We could have smoothed the flow path but the gasket would still cause a step. On top of that there isn't much metal to play with before you've run out of flange for the gasket to seal against!

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02241.jpg

IMO there is no need to port the header inlets either. The exhaust ports on my heads are around 38mm dia where the Megan inlets are 40mm.

Pile of poo. Quite chuffed i only broke one bolt - and that was only so i could separate the up-pipe from the collector to remove them.

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02236.jpg

Spot the artists deliberate mistakes... :D

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02244.jpg

I was never going to manage to cover the entire headers first time was i? :D I'll be a bit more careful in future not to obscure any bolt holes with jubilee clips too.

And fitted, does anyone know the correct torque settings for the manifold-head studs?

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02246.jpg

I'm a little concerned the up-pipe is a bit on the short side. Will see how it pulls up tomorrow.

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02249.jpg

I layed it on thick on the d/p - i want flames! :D :D

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02250.jpg

Spot the differance.

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02251.jpg

The one on the right cost £6.78 from Agriemach. The one on the left cost £4.99 from Alf at Autocare in Turriff. :D

All locked and painted.

http://www.fecker.co.uk/scoobynet/pr...5/DSC02253.jpg

Turbo wrapped.

Fookin' knackered!!

Carl Davey 07 March 2005 07:37 PM

PMSL @ Andy. Road it is then. :D

flat4 07 March 2005 07:47 PM

i've got all this to come, can't wait :lol1: how much wrap was left over from the 45m?

Carl Davey 07 March 2005 07:57 PM

A couple of metres, maybe 3. With hindsight i could've over-lapped a little more on the headers. Sods law if i'd done that i wouldn't have had enough to do the turbo.

If i had to do it again i'd still buy 45 metres.

flin 07 March 2005 08:03 PM

mines in api at the moment mate, did u happen to see it when u went in for oil change, its a white sti v4

Welloilbeefhooked 07 March 2005 09:34 PM

Carl, what did you do to stop all the crap from the mild porting getting into the turbo? I thought you would have to strip the unit first?

Carl Davey 07 March 2005 10:55 PM

Fookall. I'll blast the turbine with some air before i refit it. If it was the compressor i'd be a little more concerned.

Peanuts 08 March 2005 08:04 AM

Carl sell me your spare 3m??
pretty please?
you doing SSO?
