Clunking from the rear somewhere
I have an 01 bugeye, developed a bit of a rattlely/clunking from the rear near side, noticable around town on rough roads and over speed bumps. Since replaced the drop links and things got quieter, but theres still some clunking. Sounds like stuff moving around in the boot - but its empty. I have Eibachs on, not sure if the noise could be connected?

I do have some noise from my eibachs on my MY03 WRX, and i too have powerflex rear drop links. I am told it is the way the springs are. I find it hard to believe, but i dont know enough about them to comment. lol.

Could just be the springs moving in the bottom seats I guess, I certainly get this noise on the fronts, but the back ones have a plastic wrap on them where they meet the seat, which I thought would keep them quiet....

Rear ARB bushes - £5 odd for the pair from Subaru sorted what you are describing on my classic;)

My MY01 clunks every day, told by several people, nothing to be concerened about.
Was also told it could be the rear plate style diff making noise (???) |
was gonna suggest drop links, but if thats not cured it........ don't know. sorry.
drop links sorted it on mine. :) |
I had a similar problem on my my97 turbo.
It turned out to be the rear n/s exhaust hanger which is hung from the car by a bolt through a steel sleeve the bolt had become loose causing a clonking sound, not sure but i think it is the same arangement on the newer cars. NB any clonking noise should not be tolerated as it generally means something is loose or has too big a clearance. :nono: |
£100 says its the bushes, i had this on my my95, cheap to fix like!

After just 18k miles I'd be suprised if its the ARB bushes already, but then again one of the drop links was shot. For the cost think I'll do the ARB bushes front & back, maybe cosider the Powerflex whilst I'm at it......

I have the same problem on my my02 bug, a clunking sort of sound every now and again coming from the rear of the car. Definately not the exhaust as thats brand new.

I found I got the noise when one side of the cars suspension travelled (pot hole, bump etc...) if both rear wheels travelled at once there was no noise hence how I finally sussed what it was. I found fitting the rear drop links increased the noise of the clunk. SIDC FAQ also states that it is a known problem on WRX's (think this is related to the classic though). Ayde;) |
Right, replaced the rear ARB bushes, but theres no improvement, on 'normal' roads I don't really notice the noise, but over the hundreds of speed bumps where I live - its driving me crazy! Anyone else with Eibachs and solid drop links experience an increase in noise? any other ideas?

I get the same thing sometimes on my 2001 bugeye WRX, clonk from nsr corner, although in my case it's more noticable when throwing the car around. I was thinking loose exhaust mounting but haven't taken a look underneath yet.
Are exhaust clonks common on these cars? |
