ECUTEK question

I have recently bought a 2002 WRX, and am about to fit a HS decat downpipe and centre section. I am also seriously thinking about having a ECUTEK remap. Firstly what is the difference between this and, say a superchips remap. I have also been told that because of the increased boost pressure this could cause the up-pipe cat to melt and get sucked back into the turbo and, BOOM!http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/images/icons/icon9.gif Is this true??

IIRC the superchips conversion is not actually a re-map, just a tweak to make the engine run more boost (bleed valve and fuel cut defender / eliminator, I think?). The ECUTEK would be a full remap of the existing ECU, including fuelling, etc, keeping all other features and learning abilities. This helps get the turbo in at lower revs & still protecting the engine,so would be better.

There have allegedly been cases (I have seen a photo of one in the states) where an up-pipe cat has overheated and broken up, knackering the turbo. An ECUTEK could be set up to run lower boost and get round that problem, but I would seriously consider removing your up-pipe cat - it helps perfromance through better flow into the turbo as well as allowing more boost. If you want to stay emmissions friendly, I'd advise thinking about a sports cat downpipe/centre section or keeping you old centre cat. If you mean you're getting Hayward & Scott pipes, I believe they do a sports cat downpipe.

Am more than happy with my 02WRX with decat up-pipe, sports car exhaust and ECUTEK - 284bhp/272lbft on one visit to Power Engineering's rollers, with very good power/torque everywhere from 2500-7000rpm.

Power engineering has a good explanation of why Ecutek is a much better solution than more simple "just up the boost" processes on their web-site. Interesting reading.

Best

watch who you get to do it though, a few of us have had to pay for it to be done twice
