Apexi AVcr - Installation Help

Got my AVcr today...I had to download the manuals from the Apexi Home page...

Having some trouble finding out which is my ECU Layout..one looks similer...but im not 100% Sure...

My ECU has 3 connectors.

Can anyone here help?

Its for MY98 UK Spec...

Cheers

Question on the Boost Solenoid Valve...

Im little confused by reading the manual.....

The Boost Solenoid Valve (COM) port connects to the Actuator...
The Boost Solenoid Valve (NO) port connects to the Compressor...
The Boost Solenoid Valve (NY) port is open to the atmosphere..

Actuator:
Is this on the Turbo? (round connected to the turbo with a long rod)

Compressor:
Is this the pipe at the end of the Turbo towards where the hose connects for the Intercooler pipe?

Yep.....

CataIunya 11 October 2004 11:25 PM

and yep...... ;)

Pressure Sensor

Thanks...

Lastly the Pressure Sensor:

Shall I use the T-Piece, and connect to where my Boost Gauge is connected on the Manifold?

Also where can i mount it?

SamUK 12 October 2004 03:02 PM

anyone??

FB Tuning 12 October 2004 03:08 PM

All the MAP sensor needs to see is Manifold pressure, therefore you can 'T' it into your boost gauge line.
I mounted mine to the plate that holds the standard boost control solenoid with double sided sticky pads.

:)

if you are using an avc-r then you no longer need a boost gauge do you?
so, you can simply connect the sensor to the manifold where you boost gauge is connected to.
otherwise yes, t into the boost gauge line.
I mounted my pressure sensor between the nearside susp. turret and the side of my top mount, it is zip tied (as is everything else on my car  ) to a fuel line and then passes throught the bulkhead above the ecu location.

all the above are for a 99 car

Thanks Guys...

Clive above sent me some ECU Pin outs...

Im just little confused...The Apexi Wiring Diagram on the wesite is slightly different to what Clive has sent to me.

Apexi Wiring diagram table: for the engine codes:

EJ207
EJ205
EJ20K
EJ20G

On the Engine it says : "EJ20"
On the Right Shock (facing the car) there is a silver sticker which says Engine Type "EJ20GNWBxxx"

Can i assume that i can take the 1st 5 of the code ie: EJ20G and follow the Apexi wiring diagram?

Any help?

Sam

can you not have a look at the loom arrangement on your OE ecu and then compare that with the wiring section at the back of the apexi manual...

(thats how I realised that I had the wrong PFC ;) )
if your stuck and you PM me I should be able to work it out for you tonight when I get home.

SamUK 12 October 2004 04:41 PM

Okie Dokie...

Will try it this evening...

Had a thought...

I already have a Apexi Solenoid Valve in my car, have checked the hose's and they are connect correctly. Forgot to check the lead that connects to the Wire coming from the AVCr...I am assuming that currently it is connecting to the Power Fc...???

If so can I disconnect it and connect to the cable from the AVCr?

Sam

Peanuts 12 October 2004 04:45 PM

good call!
if the connection block is the same (avc-r solenoid is two pin isnt it?) and you confirm with say your mapper then that should be game on.

so, how far have you got and what are you needing done before I lose track of time completely:D

(I love my avc-r, even getting used to the machine gun solenoid noises under the bonnet)

SamUK 12 October 2004 05:35 PM

Start with the Pinouts....

I have been through the ECU Pin Outs and need to check if what they call on the Apexi manual are the same as what I have found:

Need to connect to the following:
Power, Ground, Throttle, Speed, and RPM

Apexi Manual:
B136
Pin 2 – IG Power
Pin 12 - Ground
Pin 16 - Throttle

B135
Pin 3 - Speed
Pin 14 - RPM

Pin Outs from Clive Jpg’s
B136
Pin 2 – Main Relay 12V
Pin 12 - Ground
Pin 16 – TPS Signal

B135
Pin 3 – Speed Sensor
Pin 14 - TACH

Now can I assume that the following words have the same meaning?

IG Power = Main Relay 12V
Throttle = TPS Signal (throttle position switch)
RPM = TACH

Under the Bonnet

I already have a Solenoid fitted; I assume this is connected to the PowerFc in my car, as that is where currently the Boost is controlled from.
I will be taking this out and replacing it with the new one that came with the AVcr.

Boost Solenoid:

The “COM” Port to the turbo actuator
The “NO” Port to the turbo compressor feed line
The “NC” Port Vented to the atmosphere (I have a cap on the existing Solenoid, shall I not put this back on?)

The other cable that has a smallish connecter I will connect to the AVcr…..and not to what the original one was connected to. This is the connection for the device that will control the boost? (I think)

Pressure Sensor:

Will mount this near the solenoid as advised above, and run a feed into where the Boost gauge is connected in the manifold.

I am out now, and will be doing the above this evening, so if anyone can comment if it is correct or not…would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance....
Sam

SamUK 12 October 2004 08:50 PM

Okay...just got in...

Seems lots of people have these fitted...but no one can tell me if the above is correct or not?

Anyway im off to the back shed to rip my ECU apart...

SamUK 12 October 2004 11:16 PM

Update - Now fitted and is turning on....

Okay....

Unit now connected, thought i smelt something burning near the ECU but not 100% sure so will have to check again in the morning... :(

Boost is showing on the AVCr... :)

However the Revs seem to be lower then the actual Rev on the Dash? (No idea why?)

I have not connected to the Solenoid yet, as I am not sure how it will affect the boost or the drive...as I am of course new to the AVCr

Have noticed a setting for Select Car….What should be in here?

Can someone tell me what settings I need to configure to get myself started…?

Thanks

Peanuts 13 October 2004 07:35 AM

RE: wrong revs showing on display...

I think that mine came set up for a 6 cylinder car and that if you go to the ETC mode and then option one is car type, change it to be a 4cyl. car and it will show correct revs.
if you are getting remapped at all then ask your friendly neighbourhood mapper to install the solenoid for you.
failing that, its digi camera time at the weekend for me :)

SamUK 13 October 2004 09:11 AM

You were right, actually figured that out on the way to work… :)
Correct RPM now showing…

The Solenoid, does to look too hard to install, (actually im only swaping the old for new) though at the moment the pipe going to the Compressor feed seems to have some extensions in it which change the size of the pipe??

I will change this after I have read through the manual, so that I can at least start with the basic boost setup, as I am not sure how the learning or the gears etc work….

I will be getting a remap from AndyF, just waiting on him to reply to my email I sent…but still waiting on my FMIC…

SamUK 13 October 2004 09:30 AM

Mounting location:

The only place I can think of mounting this in MY98, is the Centre console just in front of the Gear leaver? Tilted upwards so I can see, I will cut a small grove in the plastic and seal the unit into place…

Bit reluctant to mount on the Dash, as I don’t want some Jippo to think it’s a TV screen and brake into my car and take it…

At present I have in my car the following:

Mounted on a pillar pod
60mm Boost gauge
60mm Oil Temp Gauge (not working)

Round seal around the Speedo behind the indicator leaver
Blitz DCII Turbo Timer –

Centre Air vents removed, replaced with a piece of wood, carbon fibre back.
Blitz ID Meter on one side
Power FC on the other side

Stuck to the windscreen -
My XDA Phone holder

So as you can guess my car looks like a spaceship…

Any thoughts…..on anything that can go?

Peanuts 13 October 2004 09:44 AM

get rid of:
boost gauge (sorted by avc-r)
oil temp (not working so junk it)
XDA phone holder (you tart ;))
in fact, junk the lot ;)

I have, avc-r, dual oil/oil guage in a-pillar, commander unit blu-tacked over rev counter and thats yer lot.
(avc-r displaying boost and revs, commander displaying ignition timing, knock, injector duty and water temp).

SamUK 13 October 2004 09:58 AM

Okay..okay....

This can go: Boost Gauge, Oil Temp Gauge and the dual piller Pod

XDA...well, working in IT does that to you...i use it for my Tom Tom :)

So where shall i mount the AVcr? (think it may be too low near the gear leaver?

Peanuts 13 October 2004 10:14 AM

aahhh!
the age old question. well
i had mine down by the ciggie lighter and it got in the way of the 12v socket.
so Ive moved it up to my centre console hatch up top (99 dash) which means it hides away at night nicely.
Im going to try and use a phone holder ;) to mount my commander unit as I have a fire extig. mount just to the left of the centre bit which looks ripe for fettling.

SamUK 13 October 2004 10:32 AM

Down by the Cigarette lighter…is that not too low? I assume if I am to get rid of the boost gauge, another needs to be in the face. Maybe No?

Once set do I really need to look down much at it?

How bout in the corner of the windscreen?

SamUK 13 October 2004 10:05 PM

Okay...went out for a drive, and near the grear stick is too low..

Anyone recomend any mounting positions?

SamUK 16 October 2004 02:26 PM

Connected the Soloniod

Okay...have now connected under the bonnet...

How do I know or can I check if the AVRr is controlling the boost and not the power fc?

Sam

mystery inc. 16 October 2004 02:48 PM

sorry to but in on this tread but. when you fit a electronic boost controller do you need to fit a fuel cut defencer still. my car is over boosting slightly already.also what do you do with the boost selonoid.

SamUK 16 October 2004 03:44 PM

Not sure...but i have a power fc...which controls the fuel..

Not sure what you mean by what do you do with the boost solenoid?

What boost controller are you using?

SamUK 16 October 2004 03:48 PM

Engine Check Light ON!!!???

Just took the car out and my Engine Check Light is on..?

The PowerFC does not seem to be controlling the boost anymore, as on the display it shows - - -, and i am able to control it using the AVCr...

The car is back in the back garage, and have disconnected the -ve terminal, to see if it clears the Error...?

Not sure why it is there??

Anyone?

my apexi afc done that so i reset the afc in the menu and it was okay.

the boost controller i will be using is the greedy profec b 2.if u raise the boost past the fuel cut (15psi) withe the boost controller will the fuel cut still kick in
