Songs sung with accents

A lad at work says that "In'it funny how all songs are sung without the singer's accents.."

To which i replied "how about the proclaimers & the pogues"

He then said "I bet there's no others"

I just wondered if any of you people out there can think of any others..??

Catatonia
Tom Jones
The Streets

:)

Jap2Scrap 08 October 2004 10:28 PM

Cerys Matthews' accent is fake though, so not sure Catatonia counts. She's got Welsh parents but she was born and raised in England.

Dracoro 08 October 2004 10:35 PM

I saw Catatonia many years ago, when they weren't so heard of, supporting the Manic Street Preachers and Cerys did NOT have a welsh accent on any of the songs they did. Then the whole 'Welsh' thing  happened so I guess see saw distance (money) in milking the accent thing.

Patricia Kaas - It's a Man's World.

CrisPDuk 09 October 2004 02:08 AM

Bjork:)

Not sure whether it's an Icelandic accent, but I'm damned sure it ain't an English/American one;)

CrisPDuk 09 October 2004 02:09 AM

In addition, I'm pretty sure James Brown sings with accent intact:D

ScoobyDoo555 09 October 2004 07:32 AM

Regardless of whether Cerys Matthews' accent is real (I'll check on Monday - my mates have engineered them, so they should know ;)), the post is about singers who sing songs with accents.

She still applies IMHO :p

I can assure you 100% that Cerys has a h-i-e-w-j South Welsh accent; this is particularly likely to be the case as she can also speak the local lingo. No cynical marketing ploy going on here - she rrrrrrrrrreally does say Road Rage like that! Others:

Gorky's Zygotic Monkey
Super Furrys
Shirley Bassey (admitedly not the one of where she was born though ;))
Shabba Ranks
Kraftwerk
Travis (slight...)
A-Ha
Roxette
Dragostea din Tei (sorry!)
Dana International
& anyone else on Eurovision!

I can speak french but I haven't got a french accent :D

Seriously though, I'll have to have a word with my source because she reliably informed me that this was the case a few years back. Apparently her parents and Cerys' family are friends.
