Route 66 - anyone ever done it?

Ive been thinking about it from time to time but after watching a cool documentory & a recent visit to california Ive decided I'd like to do a holiday driving route 66.

Has anyone ever done it?

Does route 66 still actually exist?

Buckrogers 04 October 2004 11:09 PM

I cant find it!

Better off flying into San Fran, driving down coastal roads 101 & 1 to LA. At least you are by the coast all the time. Did a bit of it last year, very nice.

yep for most of it, some parts are unchanged for decades

Not the best looking site but some good info here

I'd especially want to go to the wigwam motel :)

I found one holiday package but its a bit expensive http://products.ebookers.ie/template...4&id_prod=6059 and it doesnt include the oneway surcharge on the car :(

Yes we have done "Route 66" when we stayed at Circus, Circus last year in Las Vegas, we had a day out and went to hoover Dam and past Hackberry Stores (which is a must) on our way to the Grand Canyon south rim, we went by car and round trip took us 14 hours but well worth it. (got some excellent pics to show for it)

I have MS Streets and Trips (USA autoroute), does not show "Route 66".

The 1st link you show, with the states and route layout, shows HW 40, HW 44 and HW 80, West to East.

Just rent a car one way, through one of the big compaines, airport to airport. Find accomadation along the way yourself. After all, if you book the whole thing in advance, who knows how long you want to take or stay in one particular place.

We rented 4x4 one way from SF to LA airports, if there was a surcharge it was not much at all.

If you ever plan to motor west,
travel my way, take the highway that's the best.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

It winds from Chicago to LA,
more than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

Now you go through Saint Looey
Joplin, Missouri,
and Oklahoma City is mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo,
Gallup, New Mexico,
Flagstaff, Arizona.
Don't forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
when you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

To travel Route 66 is one of my life ambitions - by Bike of course. And there are holidays out there....

Its more the spirit of the road Im interested in, while there may not be a complete Highway 66 anymore, its the towns and places Im interested in.

MS trips & streets wont show it as the road was decomissioned in 1985. In 1990, the U.S. Congress passed Public Law 102-400, the Route 66 Study Act of 1990. The act recognized that Route 66 "has become a symbol of the American people's heritage of travel" so they are attempting to preserve it.

A lot of the original road still exists according to web sites Ive looked at, most recomend this map to navigate.

Lycos have a good article here too :)

Ahhh, I see now!

Still think you should just hire the car and do your own thing though.

Drove from NY to LA last year with my best mate. We did bits on Route 66, but only by chance.

Actually, most of the holiday was by chance. The only plan we had was a flight into NY JFK, a flight out of LAX 2 weeks later, and the idea that it would be nice to visit a few places on the way (Washington DC, Denver, and Las Vegas).

Everything was just done on a day to day basis, the basic idea just being to "head west". We got up, had a quick snack breakfast at the hotels (Super 8 highly recommended for VFM, only stayed in one slightly duff one in 17 nights), drove until we got fed up each day, and stopped for for food & fuel as required in between.

We had a fantastic trip, glorious weather (it rained one afternoon & overnight one night), the scenery is amazing.

All I can say really is "Stop thinking and do it!"

Feel free to post / PM / email if you'd like to know any specifics or ask anything.

John.

ps - It's raining here :( This time last year we were in LA in the sun.

Yes as i said we done it last year, i have just found this illustrated guidebook to the mother road we picked up at a gift shop in "KINGMAN", shows the whole route from east to west, even shows motels and resturants to stop on route 66, it is written by Bob Moore and patrick Grauwels, i am sure you would be able to pick it up here.it cost me $19.95.
