Factory 0-60 mph tests
 

I wonder how they perform 0-60 mph tests. Does it have standarts and what do they use for measuring ?

Depends if they are aiming for treble 20 and not the bullseye :)

There won't be passengers, luggage etc!!

And apparently they use 100 RON for the tests

Apart from that, guess most things have to be standard

probably the lightest person they can find to drive, stickiest tyres, dump the clutch, well bedded in engine, bugger all petrol, no water in the washer bottle, no spare tyre, etc...

Most have a passanger and a full tank of fuel iirc

Heard the same. all manufacturers will have different ways of testing IMO.

Some manufacturers may purposely try to get a slow 0-60.

Think about it, if a mondeo took 8 seconds to hit 60 instead of 10 seconds, what would it do to the insurance rating?

We do 0-62 (100kph)

using standard car, with 1/2 tank of 98 ron fuel (normal pump fuel the engine is tuned for), there are no sticky tyres or weight reduction measures, the measuring equipment is Datron optical speed sensors which measure the road using doppler shift (i dont know how it works) we also have satalite equipment but dont use it so 0 - 62 as its not accurate enough, but it can map out handling circuits etc so comibined with yaw sensors and linear potentiometers we can evalute handling and lateral forces

I've heard that VAG and BMW do the tests with a passenger, but no real proof.

I know a bit more from the motorbike world .... certainly in the 70s and 80s, the acceleration times got by US magazines should be taken with a LARGE pinch of salt. They were usually done by professional drag racers, on real drag strips with proper grippy surfaces etc ..... about as far from the "real world" as you can get ....

RayC - any passengers? i guess the weight of the people is the "average person".

also, this 0-60mph (or 0-100kph) - how is this achieved? i.e. dump the clutch at xxxx rev's till you get the best run, or a take off without wheelspin, killing the clutch etc?

personally i think 0-60 times, while good for pub talk are crap nowadays, 0-100 (mph!) is where it's at :) in gear times, 50-70 etc are useful also.

part of the VW group, we use the average person to be 70kg, we dont have passengers

the cars in the brand i work for are all automatic, so 2500rpm with left foot on the brake to let the torque convertor lock up then release the brake and apply full throttle (ESP off) and wait about 4.9 seconds

no prize for the first person to guess the brand

Subaru were a tad conservative in their 0-60 times for the classic turbo: 6.4??? Yeah right!!! :lol1: Take a second off that! It did mean insurance group 17 rather than 19 or 20 though, so we're not gonna complain! :cool:
