Anyone .

i think its around 5.5 seconds mate:D

Thank you MO

Mitchy260 03 October 2004 11:34 AM

Evo magazine recorded a 5.4 0-60 with 14.6 0-100

GC8 03 October 2004 11:37 AM

Bear in mind that JDM cars will accelerate way quicker due mostly to their lower gearing; JDMs also have more torque. To put this in perspective my JDM 'wagon accelerates like a scalded cat despite having little more power than most UK cars; the lower gearing and the greater mid-range torque (279.49 N*m @ 3500 rpm as opposed to 308.91 N*m @ 5000 rpm) allow it to keep up with virtually everything.

Mitchy260 03 October 2004 11:43 AM

I wouldn't say way quicker mate.

A 280bhp sti reaches 60 in 4.8 secs compared to 5.4secs for a 215bhp UK classic. Given the STi has shorter gearing and 65bhp up the difference is only 0.6secs. Not that much TBH

WRX versions only score 60 in 5.1 secs

When it comes to 0-100 between a 215bhp classic and a 280bhp sti the difference grows to 2 secs

215bhp UK.......14.6
280bhp Sti.......12.6

GC8 03 October 2004 11:48 AM

I know what you mean Mitchy; but in the scheme of things over half a second is a large improvement isnt it? In the same way three seconds is nothing really; but tell that to someone racing over a quarter mile where 13 seconds is a quick car and 10 seconds is a monster, its all relative.

A UK PPP could also be worth considering - I know my MY00 with PPP flies up to 60 and thats with the UK gearing. Official 0-60 time for 'WR' is 5.19 and 0-100 13.97. Not bad for a UK spec machine :)

*Sonic* 03 October 2004 12:04 PM

With my UK MY00 PPP I got 5.17s with a 3k pussy launch

Hmmmm pinch of salt really ;)
If your wagon is before 97 then it wont go much faster than a UK car anyway as they were only 220ps.
And uk v JDM....
You will find that the gear ratio's are not much different for the first 4 gears, if different at all, the biggest difference is 5th gear, which is ratio'd lower on JDM cars, and reduces them down about 17mph on top end (certain models only as some have longer 5th gear ratios).
The biggest and most profound difference is in the delivery of the torque, this is where the STi models dominate, as out of the box they normally have a higher torque ratio than other JDM/UK cars.

I've got a reprint somewhere from one of the car mags, that I picked up in a Scoob dealer. It's of the '98 car with Prodrive interior and wheels but otherwise standard.

It got 5.2 to 60, 2 up with half a tank.

ALi-B 03 October 2004 12:17 PM

Bear in mind official JDM 0-60 times are based on JDM fuel too :p

My mildly modded UK 97 can consistently do 0-60 in sub 5.5 second, average is around 5.1. The quickest was 4.6, but TBH I think there was a cock up on that one which worked in to my favour - still, my mates believe it ;):D

GC8 03 October 2004 12:31 PM

The final drive is lower; thats what makes the difference, not the gear ratios. Alcazar, wasnt that 'Performance Car'?

Simon

ALi-B 03 October 2004 12:40 PM

shamelessly pasted from SIDC faq .....

Both Performance Car and Autocar magazines tested the 4 door saloon (pre '97 model) with an identical 5.9 seconds for the dash to 60 mph. These tests were carried out with a driver, passenger and a full tank of fuel over a number of runs to eliminate the effects of wind assistance/resistance.

On 4th Feb. 98, Autocar tested a 1998 specification five door hatchback. A top speed of 143 mph was recorded, with the 0-60 mph time being dispensed with in only 5.5 seconds, and 0-100 mph in 15.8. The standing 1/4 mile was completed in 14.2 seconds at 97 mph. The 30-70 mph increment was achieved in 5.6 seconds (a whole 1 second faster than a manual Porsche Boxster!)

However, the most remarkable tests were carried out on a standard 4 door saloons during November 1997. Firstly Top Gear magazine covered the 0-60 mph sprint in only 5.2 seconds! Then Performance Car (sadly no longer with us), as part of their 0-60 challenge timed the Impreza at a mind blowing 5.03 seconds for the 0-60 sprint, with the 1/4 mile being covered in 13.72 seconds at 100.6 mph. It should be noted though, that the Performance Car tests were carried out at Santa Pod drag strip (quality grippy tarmac), with only the driver, a near empty fuel tank and in one direction only.

Ah but you are forgetting just one thing here. The UK scooby hit 60 and the timing stops at the top end of 2nd gear. A short-ratio'd STI (say an RA or Type-R) needs to be into 3rd before hitting 60. So if you factor in the time taken to make the additional change and suddenly its quite a difference.

I had a UK MY99 and after been in both a Type-R and an RA I can categorically say the next scooby I buy will have the short ratio's. The acceleration is simply savage :D

sti4 does 0-60mph in 4.4secs (ref: autocar - from memory)

salsa-king 03 October 2004 10:32 PM

the std MY97 was tested with TopGear (i think it was them) and they got the first 5.2secs from a Phaze 1 engined Uk car like that... thats years ago but set the bench mark!!!

SilverTurboWagon 03 October 2004 10:52 PM

IMHO any Impreza is insane to 60, but the true test of the performance car is 0-100.

0-60 is for Saxo's.

TAINTON 04 October 2004 09:22 AM

Sure I read in my Subaru Impreza's book that Autocar unofficially recorded a 0-60 blast of under 5 secs for a wr1 PPP classic.

Will digg this out later on.

 Thats helpful in a country with a 70mph speed limit :)

GC8 04 October 2004 02:07 PM

The speed limit has nothing to do with this discussion does it? I would agree that a 0 - 100 Mph is a better test of a cars performance but it is totally off topic.

1/4mile is a better test of a cars performance :)

But the 4 door STI 3 has a, not quite so close, ratio box as the R and RA and I can get 65 in 2nd at around 7,500 rpm, still got 750 rpm before redline. Are you saying I am quicker than the R and RA to 60? I think not!

pnbond007 04 October 2004 04:54 PM

I've a slightly.!!! moded 93 WRX - RA, 0 - 60 got to be close to 4 secs, its a mad machine.

well it usually spreads the shopping all over the boot & breaks the eggs.....

Tell you what guy's it makes me smile :-)

No because despite having to make 3 changes it still whoops your car or a UK with 275bhp simply because its accelerating like a b!tch in each gear as they are so short :)

i'd say a combination of 1/4 mile , 0-100-0 , and several different track days on different styles of track under varied weather conditions would be a better test of a cars performance....

;) :p

olliecampbell 07 October 2004 10:20 AM

I would have said that 50-70 in top is the best way of looking at perfomance?

Why?

Cannot remember ever using 5th gear to accelerate from 50-70 in any car except my non turbo diesel Fiesta van years ago. If you are accelerating from 50-70 in a turbo Impreza in 5th gear then I'd suggest you are driving the wrong car. A new gen high output TDI would more the ticket.

TonyFlow 07 October 2004 12:26 PM

My Type R Loves 50-70 in 5th!
