Calling MY93 ish WRX Owners

Hi all

After owning a my98sport for a mere 6 months, I'm going for my first wrx and cant wait!!

Be interested to know from other wrx owners of around the my93 model of what I should expect in terms of reliability or potential problems that might occur in the slightly older models?

Have to say the one I'm looking at looks pretty mint throughout and looked after, I'm more looking in the sense that I'm moving from a newer car to an older one and hoping that reliability shouldn't be affected to much as imprezas got a great history when it comes to reliability.

So, more enjoyment, reliability AND performance guys?

I've had my MY93 for 15 months. It had 42k miles and now has 49k miles.
Sum total of replacement parts (apart from small service items):

Lamda sensor at MOT time

I've had my MY93 WRX since I imported it from japan at the beginning of 2000 :D

In that time I've added around 90k miles to the 40-odd accumulated in Japan and have had very few problems.

Since owning the car, I've needed to replace the MAP sensor, water temp sensor, driver's side rocker cover gaskets, steering rack bellows on driver's side and not much else, save for regular items like oil, spark plugs, cam belt etc. Still running on the coil packs and clutch it came from Japan with!

The only problem I've had on the road was on a recent trip to the Lake District, when the top rad hose split (one too many mountain passes!). No damage was done, and the AA man managed to find a repalcement in no time :)

The exhaust is de-cat'd, but otherwise the car is still in a pretty original state (save 16" wheels and 4-pot brakes).

No squeeks or rattles....and I've no intention to change in the immediate future :) Oh, and I don't drive like a pansy everywhere!

Had mine for 18 months and it has never let me down,it's a daily driver with quite a few 'sensible' mods ;);)
Just make sure it is remapped for UK grade fuel or always use octane booster with optimax to be on the safe side.Apart from that regular oil changes and replace the cambelt regardless of history for peace of mind..........and then drive and enjoy:D:D

Ive got a Uk MY95 and had the top hose split at 82k and water temp sender go about same time.
No other problems, just maintance stuff.
very reliable for an older car.

I have had mine now for 2 1/2 years. No major problems, but spent many a £££££££ on replacement parts::eek2:
MAF sensor
O2 sensor
4 coil packs
And not forgetting the 90k service.

things to look out for-

coil packs (will cause a misfire if they havn't been changed)
radiator end tank splitting (drivers side front)
header tank splitting (around the joint)
top hose splitting
leaking power steering bottle

these are all things i have seen a lot of on the pre 96 scoob, my advice is check all of them and replace as you can afford it.

IMO octane booster doesn't appear to be necessary with the standard engine. I have never had a problem without it, though I run Optimax all the time. Rolling Road last week showed 240 bhp with just optimax and only performance mod being a scoobysport back box. No audible det either. Once you start seriously modifying it, then I would think about the octane booster.

No audible det either
just because det insn't audible dosn't mean it isn't there, these cars are mapped for 100ron fuel so putting in anything less may cause det and activate the ignition retard in the ecu, this will cause a drop in power.

a knock link is a good idea when running a import impreza.

what I thought really! it's a damn good car :notworthy
