Difference Between....

What is the difference between a Michinical and Electronic boost and Oil Temp Gauge?

Peanuts 20 September 2004 12:48 PM

wouldnt a mechanical pressure gauge read the pressure from a connected line to the back of the gauge?
ie, the boost gauge has a hose connected directly to the manifold to read the pressure.

an electronic (digital?) gauge would have a pressure sensor connected the the block to take the reading and then simply use the gauge to display the reading I think?

I use SPA for oil gauges and it doesnt require hot oil to be passed into the cabin to know whats gong on

correct

Hmm...Can you please explain in baby language...

Is there any benifit? or shall i order a michinical gauge..i think oil temp has to be electronic..

Mechanical tend to be cheaper.

Mechanical relies on the source of info going to the gauge. eg for oil temp, the oil travels to the gauge (usually). ie in the cabin.

Electrical, use a sensor sytem, the sensor is placed at the relevant point on the engine, and an electrical signal is sent to the gauge in the cabin via a cable.

Simple as that :D

Thats great..

Found a site in thr US, prices's are fairly the same..Are the electronic gauges allot more harder to fit?

Okay...

I have decided to buy the following two gauges:

Greddy Boost Gauge
Greddy Oil Temp Gauge

Next question:

Options avaliable:

Michinical Boost Gauge
Electronic Oil Temp Gauge

OR

Electronic Warning Boost Gauge
Electronic Warning Oil Temp Gauge

Which pair...??

hows about the SPA dual gauge range, all digital with no hot oil passing into the cabin area.
Defi's if your minted (or a tart;))
its all down to personal choice in the end, all you can do is research whats best for you, not be told whats best.

note:
although I havent heard of such things, there is potential for hot oil to get into the cabin area if for some reason you suffer gauge failure/pinch the hoses etc etc

It's "mechanical" BTW

Personally, I would avoid mechanical gauges as I don't fancy running hot oil inside the cabin. Electronic ones are still pretty simple to fit. I have the SPA gauges and they just needed a 12v ignition supply and a good ground feed.

Digital gauges can be a bit tiresome to read as they're always jumping around (nature of digital). That's why I stuck with a traditional mechanical boost gauge.
