IIRC wales somewhere where they did the land speed record attempt. And the guy who "lost his head" had nothing to do with the car turning over - it was far more gruesome than that!!

They have since dug the car up and restored it.

Lol

Well if I say the car was chain driven rather than prop driven - does that give you any clues??

OllyK 20 September 2004 10:29 AM

It was fitted with a 27,059 cc Liberty aero engine, Benz gearbox and featured a chain final drive.
That's one big engine!!

Jamo 20 September 2004 10:33 AM

that chain is rather large and close to the driver isnt it!! ouch. did he have a broken chain at 160mph?

So I heard - but it could be an embelishment of the truth. Have only been able to find confirmation of "decapitation" so far!!

This is the car he died in now it has been restored:

He returned to Pendine again in 1927 but on the 3rd March while attempting to increase the record, something broke - nobody is sure exactly what, a wheel, a driving chain or a radius arm, but the car turned over and Thomas was killed.
Hmmm - could well be embelishment....

Ray_li 21 September 2004 10:29 AM

anybody else thinking of taking their scooby to pendine beach?

Mmmm - can't wait to get all that nice corrosive salt water in to all those nooks and crannies!!!

Ray_li 21 September 2004 11:12 AM

thats a bad idea.

Andrew Dixon 21 September 2004 11:30 AM

Wonder how chuffed Porsche, BMW and Jaguar were when their very expensive, shiny cars where returned having been sandblasted and caked in salt? :)
