What spider is this?

Common garden spider or somthing else? Looks different to garden spider pics I have seen on the net so far  Oh and the below pics don't do the beastie justice on his size :o I have dug out the front garden flower bed today and ripped everything out to just earth for now as it was packed with these little nasties on the plants, I walk past them to the scoob on the drive and yesterday one got me with his web, I thought i'd got rid of him only to open my car door this morning to find him having cast a huge web right across my door on the iside of my car :o Don't need that first thing in the morning! :D

looks a bit oranger than the normal garden spider, or is it just me? mutation maybe?:D:D:D, get it to bite ya and become the next real life spider man:D

Yes it was more orange than all the rest, and all the others were smaller by a long way with not such large round bodies. It didn't get a chance to bite me as it was moved to a neighbours garden with a spade :D

could've been worse - if you needed a forklift I wouldn't sleep again... ever

It's a garden spider-female I think because of the large round abdomen. They can grow pretty big and make massive webs about18" in diameter, usually hiding in a corner of it behind a rolled up leaf if they see you.

its one of them things that kill soldiers in iraq ;)

sleep tight :D

ajm 19 September 2004 07:48 PM

I agree, almost certainly a common garden spider, they come in differing colours. Did it have little cross-like spots on top of its abdomen?

That sounds like it, no sh!t on the big webs, like I said one of them had spun a web right across the inside of my drivers door completely filling it so when I went to get in the car is was waiting to pounce :o That one got swiftyly despatched to the neighbours garden as well :D

Must be the time of year or something as there were masses of the little nasties all over my garden, but none looked as big or evil as the one in the pics above.

ajm don't remember the cross like spots, was too busy trying to shake the thing off the spade, it wouldn't let go and had already started making another web on the spade immediately after I picked it up :o

I used to have a "pet" one of these in my old house. One day I got buzzed by a wasp and did what any decent human would do - I swatted it and chucked it in the spiders web. From then on, whenever I saw a wasp I got it and shoved it in the spiders web - to the point it started becoming v aggressive - when I was putting one in the web one day it reared up waiting. Fearing I was creating a new strain of super spider and thinking within the next few weeks I'd end up in the wasps position, I decided to let it start feeding itself.

:D
