Should I chip in for an M5 ?

I have a choice. (My wife tells me so !)

Sell 2001 318 SE Beemer + MY99 Scooby

Buy M5 Beemer + a runaround (Corsa yada yada yada)

Is the M5 a vibrant drive ?? Can it be chipped for grunt etc etc ??

:Whatever_

I am fighting to keep the "Power of Scoobydom"

Dude the M5 is a 400 hp car with at least 450nm of torque

YES its very grunty (Don't think you can do much to it power wise as it a non turbo - but ffs 400 BHP!!!!)

I had a 540 upto about a month ago - again loads of torque 400nm but only 265BHP and that flew. However its a BIG saloon and although it drives REALLY well its still a big saloon.
Hense not so much on the sprint 0-60 (around 6.5) but midrange and round corners where you just can't keep a turbo on boost it flew. 50-100 not much kept up with it. (Except an M5 lol)

But i bet a scooby could.

The M5 however does 0 - 60 in about 5 secs so its quick for a 2 tonne car. And all the right ups say its the bo**ox handling wise. After driving one i'd agree but its no Porsche Boxster round the twisties (no surpises there)

As for problems the V8's have VERY common electrical problems (more toys than you can shake a shi*y stick at - even the headrest went up and down electrically (God is miss those rain sensors (anyone know if you can get em for a scoob???))
They also have issues with their cooling systems i've heard.
However none of what i've heard was specifically pointed at M5 so may only effect the rest of V8's 535 540 730 735 740.

Disclaimer all about probs is just what i've heard it may be wrong please don't sue me mr BMW
Servicings not cheap either my 540 was 200 quid oil 220 inspection 1 280 inspection 2 (That may be without VAT can't remember)

PS - I got 22 Mile per gallon mainly motorway driving around 14 round town :(

bighead 18 September 2004 09:52 PM

think a m3 0r a 966 would be a better drive :)

New M3 is BORING - old one was really involving.

Get the arse hanging out on a corner and pull it back nicely to whip up the road - real enjoyment.

New M3
Get its arse out and then pulls itself back cos that what the traction control is programmed to do - hmm real driver ability needed here - real enjoyment???? Nah

996 Loverly car but Boxster S drives much better even though it needs more power (Driver enjoyment is the key to the Boxster S not raw power) - You need to get the Turbo for Scooby killing power tho and they aint cheap

STICK to the Scooby miles better than all of em (Er except the 911 turbo)

Well if you want a drivers cars IMHO

well My friend has a 996 twin turbo and I doubt he would kick my P1's arse
he might have more bhp (only just thou ) , mine has 350 , but the 966 is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo damm heavy compare to my P1 ,I would beat it around town ( mine is easier to chuck around :) ) and he probaly beats me on the motorway .
Rather have the scooby though ....cheaper to repair :)

Superloop 18 September 2004 10:46 PM

Only just!!! 420bhp on standard turbo and 450 on the S!!!!
Round town?
What about on B roads which do you feel is quicker there?

switch it off then..... ;) :D

The traction control is only part of why the new shape 3 (in its various guises and facelifts) is not as fun to drive as the old shape.........

whiper 19 September 2004 08:15 PM

996 turbo has at least 420 bhp and similar torque figure (with power pack its 450bhp).The porker will do 0-100mph in around 8.5secs - a P1 with 350bhp would be nowhere to be seen

And a 996 turbo weighs around 1450kg - not a "porker" by any means.

Plus it is has more grip and a considerably more superior suspension setup.A £100k just doesnt go on the name.

You don't have to "launch" your 911 either to get the 4.2 to 60 time a 3.6 litre engine that has torque before the turbos kick in help too
