problem dvd writer - sony dw-u18a

My grandad bought a new pc and everything is good except he can't burn any audio cds. I tried the supplied software (go dvd i think) and i even installed nero 6. But all it makes is tea costers. It won't work on back to back copies or conversations. tried different disks. The really funny bit is it will write data discs without any problems! Any ideas??

my mate has got a dw-u18a and it is very fussy with regards to media. He had to try about 5 different brands before he got 1 that worked 100%

yea thought that might be it but why does it write data ok on the same brand of discs?

Perhaps a bit obvious but are you closing the disk once it's burned?

If you're trying different media, i know (from discussions with customers), that the Sony drives like Infiniti CD-r.

I stopped selling them a while back as they are expensive for what is ultimately just another CD, you will get them reasonably priced at www.lordofthedeals.co.uk

yes i am closing the disk but the confusing bit is that even the dvd writer won't read the disc once its finished burning.

I'm having a similar problem between 2 drives. If I burn data to a DVDRW disc on the NEC dvdr, n then try to read that disc in a samsung dvd/cdrw combo drive it dun work anymore, it use to. The Samsung however reads normal DVDR and DVDs, CDs fine, n still burns CDRW ok. I reckon its a laser problem. Mine is getting replaced.

yea thought about the laser but if it was the laser how come i can still write data on the same brand of discs without any problems?

Some burners use TWO lasers :) Dont know if the Sony does, worth checking.

why not just write the music as a data disk  it will still play, you dont have to use "audio cd" in nero to make an audio cd

Worth a try but not much use to him for when he wants to do a disk to disk copy and it still doesnt work :(
