is my car prone to det?

moreso than some others?
Just fitted a dawes device as I was missing the power from my tek3 which I sold a few weeks ago.

Didnt have a knocklink before but fitted it along with dawes device. Without dawes I'm getting 1bar with very little KL activity (greens only). Took boost up to 1.2bar and it gets ambers on WOT@4500RPM in 4th and 5th. Got it down to just under 1.1bar and I get the odd amber at same revs/gears.

Is this quite normal? What kind of boost pressures people running with dawes and what KL activity is happening?

Car is:

MY99
3" straight through
Sti Panel filter
Airbox modified
Silicon hoses
STi 6 I/C
runs on Optimax without fail

Use octane booster or turn the boost down.

If it does it at 1.0 bar strongly suspect a dodgy MAF.

Aztec Performance Ltd 15 September 2004 07:32 PM

At 1 bar (without dawes) there is only green activity.

At 1.1bar there is occasional amber on WOT in 4th/5th @4500rpm

At 1.2bar there is more consistant ambers on WOT in 4th/5th @4500rpm

Octane booster then. Or get Delta Dash and retard the ignition on that.

Aztec Performance Ltd 15 September 2004 08:25 PM

cheers john. It was only meant to be a stop-gap until all the other bits go on.

So basically I should try and dial out ambers completely?

Yes. Especially in the midrange.

Aztec Performance Ltd 15 September 2004 09:05 PM

Basically means taking the dawes off and leaving it std then?

bttt

Your Tek 3 will have had ignition timing to go with the higher boost levels. Otherwise there would be no point in remapping - you may as well have just used a boost controller.

Now I'm on a std AE800 and Dawes MBC.

It's been explained to me that the Dawes alows much quicker spool-up than without it. This can catch the fueling out off/on boost. The one-liner was....

"Dawes device with the bypass valve drilled out to 1.5mm instead of 0.5mm (removes full boost-part throttle issues)."

Bob, it could well have been detting lightly.

Aztec Performance Ltd 17 September 2004 12:53 PM

and now the mbc is set to just under 1.1bar with std AE800 ecu and I'm still getting occassional ambers on WOT....which makes me think that maybe my car is more prone to det than others as from what I can gather people are able to run higher boost pressures without det?

Also would the 'light' detting over two years have casued any damage which at the moment isn't apparent?

The mbc is just a stop gap until I have the TD05 and supporting mods fitted, but I am wondering whther it will 'suit' my car when I'm struggling with low boost on the TD04 anyway?

Probably not caused too much damage if it's gone for two years, but you don't know that as you didn't have the knocklink on it then.

Is you intake quite oily? Think about the breathers.

A TD05 is a good detonation prevention measure - cooler charge, less exhaust manifold pressure.

Aztec Performance Ltd 17 September 2004 01:10 PM

intake?

the i/c pipes have a bit of oil on them. none in air intake pipework

markwild 17 September 2004 01:13 PM

Bob - maybe I'm reading this wrongly - how are you making 1.2 bar on a standard ECU with Dawes - I though Fuel Cut was at 1.2 ?

Aztec Performance Ltd 17 September 2004 01:16 PM

I'm on just under 1.1bar on dawes. 1.2 was when finding the right amount of boost via KL. No fuel cut though.

Ran 1.2bar on my previous tek3.
