Hello

Assuming that you just mean public domain non-copyrighted stuff, then Bit Torrent is the way to go.

Steve.

legitmately - iTunes for music

otherwise take your pick from DC++, BitTorrent or Bearshare

It might have been me mentioning that the majority of criminals are now using Bit Torrent that got the thread closed.

Well criminals use our roads too :) BitTorrent is also a favoured way of getting hold of Linux distributions amongst many other uses. Completely legit and a very useful piece of software which doesn't use a 'network' in the same sense as other P2P infrastructures, it's just a protocol.

lightning101 14 September 2004 03:44 PM

Its only criminal if you download copyrighted software.

It also has abandonware, freeware, shareware - pretty hard to find though in amongst all the useful stuff.

D4V3 14 September 2004 03:53 PM

What about Kazaa, any views

lightning101 14 September 2004 04:00 PM

Kazza will **** you machine up (technical)

Spyware, viruses - large fake files etc, etc, the only thing to woory about with torrent pages are pop-ups, and you should have good enough security to stop that anyway.

Mogsi 14 September 2004 04:29 PM

Avoid Kazaa, Edonkey, Bearshare like the plague..... Unless you like spyware & false files....

Hanslow 14 September 2004 05:01 PM

As mentioned, I don't think the mods on here have an issue with BitTorrent (or other p2p software) being mentioned as it is handy for a lot of legit media out there. What isn't allowed is the posting of site addresses where dodgy media can be obtained.

Personally, I have found BitTorrent to be very useful, again as mentioned, particularly for Linux distributions, etc.

There are a number of good client frontends for it as well for controlling / monitoring downloads.

Ill look in to BiT Torrent then

Hanslow summed it up nicely. No one has a problem with these types of programs. However if someone posts up promoting the use of Bit Torrent or any other file sharing protocol / utility to openly download illegal software or copyrighted material expect the thread to be removed.

Chris
