XP SP2 = Pants

Well, I'm writing this from my laptop while re-instaling XP from scratch on my desktop!

Installed SP2 yesterday and the first thing I noticed was IIS was no longer serving pages either on localhost or from my laptop (not available on internet!).

So, went to the control panel and double clicked the IIS Admin control and... NOTHING! Retry, reboot, retry etc. absolutely nothing! Checked the processes, all the IIS processes seem to be running as normal!

Checked the internet, nobody else seems to have had the same problem, but a few others with similar problems de&re-installed .NET 1.1 and Frontpage, so de-install tool, runs about half way and then freezes! Cancel - Nothing!

Kill processes, reboot, nothing internet related works anymore  Run recovery from CD, nothing works at all. So last resort, re-install from scratch!

Luckily I backed up data before trying to fix it, but unfortunately not before installing SP2 :iamwithst

Word of warning, if your going to install SP2, make sure you do a full backup before proceding!

I'm running sp2 - cushtie from this post. I dont use IE... perhaps thats a pointer although I doubt it. Im only running maxthon which is purely an ie overthrow.

Tis good from where I stand.

Did you leave the new built in firewall turned on then?

I've installed it on about 5 of the machines I use every day, and I've not had a problem with any of them so far. I use them for a combination of web development (ie, mozilla, opera etc), .net programming, java programming, games, video editing / graphics etc, and all have worked flawlessly...

I wonder if the sp just has problems with certain hardware setups, or if there is some problem lurking in the os installation, installing SP2 exposes it and makes it worse....

installed this over the weekend, from the moment installation was complete the pc pretty much stopped working.

every time i tried to open a program the thing crashed. then dr fkin doolittles debugger crashed, crashed on sending error reports, then had to control alt delelte restart. done this every time from boot up, not a thing worked.

yesterday rolled back the XP version to what it was previous to pack 2, now works fine again.

Are the rumours true that if you have an AMD based system, don't install it?

I've got a few issues since putting it on, things just not working as expected, so going to rebuild to SP1, DX9c and latest Forceware drivers.

Yeah, this is almost certainly the reason it is not accepting connections. The XP SP2 install enables the firewall on all connections, even if you had turned it off previously.

Just turn it off again :)

p.s. I have rolled it out to over 100 pc's so far with no problems :D

fitzscoob 14 September 2004 02:35 PM

I had the xp firewall turned off, but in the security centre it showed it turned on??

really was a pig, the only option i had was to roll it back to its previous sp

After doing a clean re-install of XP (with SP1a), added IIS components, then added SP2 and everything worked fine.

Then I installed Norton Internet Security 2003 (Antivirus and Personal Firewall), after install + live updates +reboot I started IE and got no response from IIS and couldn't start the IIS control panel again.

No other software installed, so conclusion Norton IS2003 is incompatible!

But then it all started working again! I ran a full system scan, disabled the windows security monitor thingy and set the main "Security" control of Norton to off and re-booted.

Hey presto, Norton switched itself back on and IIS is working perfectly again. :D

Now I just have to re-instal everything else :(

Dream Weaver 15 September 2004 02:52 PM

Just installed this today and everything seems fine so far. I have no 3rd party firewall software (NAT router) so maybe its the firewalls causing people problems.

All connections fine, VPN fine, Ipaq sync fine etc etc

Something will break though :D

Well, it is a Microshaft product. SP2a to fix the bugs in SP2 anyone?

Have to say that to get mine to work properly i had to do a clean install of xp with SP1a and then upgrade to SP2. Gave me the chance to get rid of a load of crap on my PC. Have now invested in Norton Ghost so hopefully now that i have my machine the way i want it, it will be a much easier task to re-install if thing do go t1ts up.

I had to modify my registry because when displaying thumbnails, it would preview about half the page then crash.

Once done no probs.

No other hassles, done all works machines.
