Best PC Monitor (gaming / digital photography / graphic design)

I am just about to spec up a new work PC for myself, but I will also be using the same system for gaming and digital photography / imaging.

Budget is pretty open, but cannot really justify spending much over £500.

Size is always great, but happy to give away an inch or so for better res / quality / response rate etc.

It has to be LCD or similar, no CRT.

Presumably I am going to be looking at a 19". Probably be speccing the system from Dell, and I do hear their 19 and 20 inch ultrasharps are good, but we are also doing some work with BenQ who also make LCD monitors.

My biggest concerns really then are response time for gaming and accurate colour space for digital imaging.

Any suggestions or comments??

I've seen the Dells, and whilst they look very nice and seemed to have good colour reproduction, I wasn't impressed with their gaming performance. The screen refresh isn't fast enough on the 19" and I could see noticable blurring when a lot of stuff was going on...
In fact I've only seen one large 19" lcd screen which I was reasonably impressed with, but that cost well over a grand...

I've yet to see a flat panel monitor which looks as good or responds as well as a decent crt. They're catching up, but they aren't there yet. Out of interest, why has it got to be an lcd? Space on the desktop perhaps?

Yeah desktop real estate. I totally agree that CRT still has the edge and are now silly-cheap, but really needs to be LCD.

Apparently BenQ are bringing out an 8ms range?

The Dell 2001FP is a little out of your budget from Dell, but they have them from time to time cheaper at www.aria.co.uk . Alternatively they can be bought from various places on Ebay, though I'm not sure I would want to risk some of the sellers on there, though they would be within your price range.

I have had one since last year, and I think it's brilliant, with its 16ms response time and 1600 x 1200 resolution.

Another vote for the dell 2001fp. Excellent all round and no blurring on games at all.

I hope this ebay link does not get deleted

I got mine from this seller without any issue. He does ship from the UK.

If they ebay link is removed then look for the seller ericbunny

and the price is £549 + £22.5

Dave.

A friend has got one of these and it does look great. You definitely can see blurring on some games with it though (especially fast moving games like Doom 3 or Far Cry). Wasn't bad enough to spoil the game though...

I don't really play games much on my PC anymore anyway, but I have to occassionally as its my business, I have RSI so I can't really use the mouse for long so play most of my gaming on xbox.

I'm more concerned really about sharpness, contrast and accurate colour space calibration.

Any graphic designers on here?? :)
