RX7 Rolling Road Session

My mate has got a 2001 RX7 with very limited mods and still on the stock twin turbos has produced 326.4bhp at the wheels. 390.8bhp at the flywheel.
Can list the mods if interested. Very short list. :)

Very impressive for that mod list!

SideShowBob 14 September 2004 07:39 AM

Im sure ive seen more powerful ones on mazdarotaryrclub.com running stock twins, not certain thou, but that must be pretty close regardless!!

Excellent result, I got 315BHP with induction, cat back exhaust (with de cat), and ECU in my old '93 RX7, so rotary units seem to respond very well to mods, any ideas what the torque was? as far as I can tell torque increases are even more significant that BHP gains with the rotaries.

Also, dont happen to have any pics? miss the amazing looks of a rex.

>> Thread hi-jack alert << great power figures -- bet it sounds nice too :)

I remember reading somewhere that the Mazda rotaries do NOT like short trips, and for longevity they should be driven at least a couple of miles from cold before switching off otherwise it kills the rotor teip seals. Is this true, or just an old wives tale?

Also do the Mazda guys do anything like moly coating the trochoid chamber and end-plates? Norton did this on their racing rotary engines for cool running and longevity.

The one's on Mazdarotaryclub have probably had the engines internals modded. Luke only leaves his running for a couple of minutes when he gets home, although he does live at the bottom of a long hill so cools down as he coasts down the hill.

Good stuff http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/...biggerGrin.gif & praise be to the best looking car let alone Jap ones ;) EVER!!!!
Performance is stupid quick & fun too ahhh but then i'm biased as i've just got mine back & had a fun weekend killing Tuscans & such like top end acceleration still scares the poopy juice out of me but i sooooooo love these cars & my credit card company love it too http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_12_8.gif lol
Will have to get mine on the rollers soon as well i guess.......

What sort of cost was that mod list?

ande 15 September 2004 12:25 AM

Alot of the stuff he took off his '93 RX7. Intercooler was £500 s/h, flywheel was about £250ish, Power FC with commander about £600ish. Air Filters were £40. Exhaust came with the car although he had taken his blitz exhaust off his old one and his new car's blitz exhaust has got a bigger bore. That rear spoiler is $1600 new. (but came with the car)
He has just bought a Trust TD06-25G Single Turbo for it now
so hopefully 350bhp at the wheels shouldn't be a problem (over 400bhp at the flywheel!!!! :eek2: !!!!!!)

And do you know what, it is f$£%ing fast!!!!

Seems to put PPP into perspective

Very quick cars, especially against all the 4WD rally rep mobiles of similar power, weight of the Type-R's is only around 1270kg's, and has low transmission losses only driving the rear wheels, so they are extremely rapid, especially when you start going over 300BHP.

I ws always amazed at how it would pull like a train even well over 130MPh, you could reach 160MPh before you knew it, and it would still be pulling hard!! bloody manic cars, if only they werent so fragile and unreliable, id have kept mine, oh, and VERY expensive to run of course.

Single turbo has to be the way to go, massive power plus none of the complexity of the twin turbo set up, be good to hear what results he gets with it, and good pics, best colour for a rex IMO!!

yeah luv it makes scoob ownership seem cheap but killing TVR's etc at the weekend is always fun :D

Scuba 15 September 2004 06:00 PM

Can anyone compare scooby ownership to RX-7 ownership cost wise etc?

scooby_si 15 September 2004 07:07 PM

yes personally i'm paying less insurance on the 7 than i was on a mildly modified UK scooby although this is c/o classic car policy & a 2nd car....everything else is generally more expensive well other than cambelt changes as they dont have them ;) lol
Check out http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/index.php for any questions you may have about the RX7 &/or any other rotary powered devices http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/...bigglasses.gif
