Email woes...

I have signed up for a BTinternet email a/c and linked it into Outlook express.

I can receive emails no problem, but can't send anything. It fails at the authorisation stage. I have configured the incoming and outgoing server settings both manually then automatically using the btinternet site app.

I access the internet via a home based LAN through a Netgear 4 port router. Should I be changing any other settings to enable outgoing email?

Any advice gratefully received! :)

You shouldn't need to make any changes to your router.

Is BT Internet your ISP?

What error message are you getting?

IIRC the outgoing mail server requires authentication.

I think it's on the servers tab. The details are the same as for the POP3

BTInternet is not my ISP.

The "requires authentication" box is checked.

I just keep getting the logon box coming up - clicking OK doesn't help It then says there was an error sending, but doesn't elaborate....

This is where your problem is. You can only send mail through a BT Internet account if you use BT Internet as your ISP. The same is true of the majority of ISP supplied email addresses.

You can usually* get around this by using you ISP's server for outgoing (SMTP) mail, leaving the BT Internet incoming (POP) server as it is. So the details would be:

email address: you@btinternet.com
incoming server: mail.btinternet.com
outgoing server: mail.YourISPsServers.com (check this on your ISPs FAQ/settings page)

If your ISP requires authentication, click the "Logon Using" option and enter the username and password you would use with your ISPs email address.

*A few ISPs also check the email address you have on the account you are attempting to send from and only allow traffic from one of their addresses. AFAIK BTInternet is not one of these.

Thanks Figment :)

I am with Plusnet and even with their outgoing setting it wasn't having it. However I have now manged to set up a plusnet email account in Outlook Express, which seems to be working OK :)

Thanks for your help :)

TDT is Spot ON....

I use MS Outlook and Outgoing Server DOES require Authentication. Place ur login details in the Server Properties and Voila!
