what free/cheap dtp Sw do you recomend

only using it to make restaurant menus

Serif Page Plus is meant to be pretty good as it was rumoured ot be based on Adobe Pagemaker.

I use Adobe InDesign myself it great but dear.

if it's just simple paper restaurant menu, you might want to have a look at microsoft publisher.

Serif PagePlus every time.

Inexpensive and more than capable of doing your menus :)
