Theft/ Car Jacking of Subarus'
 

Are Subarus' different to anyother high performance/ sports cars in the number that appear to be stolen ?

Don't get me wrong, I drive one myself, but there are much more exotic/ valuable/ sought afters cars than a Subaru. So why do so many appear to be stolen and somethimes in such worrying circumstances.

Does anybody view any other forums for other marques of car and are reports of theft/ car jacking just as common ?

I dont think they are, it does appear to be accentuated, as this is a car enthusiast forum with a hint of Subaru :)

Its much easier to steal a car by breaking down someones door and taking the keys, than it is to waste time bypassing security systems

My local paper constantly has reports of cars being stolen, or rather the keys being stolen,through letterboxes & windows, then the car being taken without consent

none of them been Subarus tho

Our local paper had a front page report on cars knicked in Manchester area (lot of it about) and who did they report on - yes, a guy with a subaru! The report also lists lots of other cars going, including his wifes merc last year, but lots of pictures of empty driveways, and subarus.

The guy was caught on the old keys hooked through the letterbox trick, which I cannot believe people do not protect themselves against. It is a well know method of car theft and so easily avoided.

My sisters BMW was nicked with the old fishing pole method through the letter box.(Manchester area)This was about two years ago and I must admit I had not heard of it then.But to get still get caught this way seems a bit !!!!!!!!

AFAIK BMWs are the most nicked brand of car, with the X5 being a particular target for the key-snatchers. No accounting for taste, I suppose :D

When you say BMWs it is not a suprise. I thought M3's would be fairly sought after. Almost twice the cost of a Subaru and similar performance.

They are stolen for the same reasons that we buy them, they are quick and even a standard WRX will outperform most police vehicles.

There are also allot more Scoobs around than the other brands of cars like BMW and Ferrari because they are a hell of allot cheaper. If you work out how many Scoobs there are and how many are stolen you'll probably find that the likes of BMW and Ferrari have worse theft records.

Black Subaru used in an armed robbery in Nottingham this week, don't know if it was car jacked as it was report on local TV.

I work for West Yorkshire Police so hear about all stolen cars in this area,

I hear about very few Subaru's being stolen to be honest, in my experience it tends to be older basic cars a lot of the time which don't attract attention on the roads i.e old escorts, and various vauxhalls.
Saxo's and 106's are popular at the moment as they are easy to break into.

It is also becoming popular for people to have their key's stolen, but because they leave them next to the front door so someone comes along with a fishing rod or similar and gets them through the letter box, with this method it can be is generally newer cars.

A good friend was almost lost his car to a carjacking last year. He pulled up outside his house in London and when he got out of his TT two kids around 17-18 jumped him. Luckily he's about 6'4" and he was able to fight them off. It really shook him up though and no, he's not a hairdresser.

There is obviously a thriving market for VW bits or cars to ring, the good metal (Mercs, Scoobs, BMW) are usually found soon after being stolen parked up in residential areas and appear to of been nicked for no purpose. If you were parking one up to see if a Tracker leads cops to it then why leave it outside someones house who gets annoyed and rings cops to report an abandoned car when none of their neighbours know whose it is.
Obviously some get used in 'jobs', but only a very small number (until we find the black one used in the robbery last week do not know where it came from, or how it got into the gangs hands).

It's probably a simple case of there being a heck of alot of Scoobies out there. So statistically there will be more of them stolen.

I've always been an Impreza fan, but have been put off by the car jacking stories and the tales about people breaking in / using violence to get the keys.


I've just about convinced myself that buying a WRX won't mean total doom at the hands of a drug crazed armed robber for my wife and kids, but can any one out there offer any words of comfort?

I live near the New Forest, the car I'm looking at is a standard '01 WRX with a tracker fitted and will be kept outside our house, in a semi secluded cul-de-sac; Just how 'at risk' will I be?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

You have to remember that for every Impreza car jacked / nicked there are thousands more that are driving around each day without a problem.

I have a MY01 WRX with two trackers on it. I bought a diskloc which acts as a visual deterent to any would be theives, so far not had a problem.

You can set the alarm up so that when you turn the key on the ignition the doors automatically lock reducing the risk of you getting car jacked.
TBH I dont really worry too much about it.

Hey Big Guy, the stories scared me before I got mine - and I live in Luton, supposedly the scummiest town in Britain!

Lots of people will offer advice such as "don't let the buggers beat you" and "I sleep with keys under pillow and I've got a baseball bat by the bed" (as I do) but only you know whether you'd use it if someone did break in. Having a wife and kids probably not (sensible) but then just hand over the keys, claim the insurance and move on. Oh yeah - buy a disklok !!

You tend to regret the things you haven't done much more than the things you have done.....go buy that scoob !! :thumb:

Think about the insurance to give an objective statistical view.

Premium = £1000
Admin = £100
say 50% for accidents and fire = £450

leaving £450 to cover theft

say average scoob = £12150 to make the numbers easy.

Then probabilty of scoob being stolen = once every 27 years !!

All of the above is subjective and open to debate but it does give a reasonable idea of the real probability of having your car stolen. (Reduce that probability again for the number that are jacked compared to traditional theft.)

The reason they are stolen is because they are hard to catch, so if you want to go and rob someone its a good getaway car...

I know a few years ago the most stolen car in Manchester was the Vx Caviler (sp)... but now I think its the Ford Escort 92 on models.

The *******s broke in to my house last year and knicked the keys to my Terzo :mad:

I woke up this morning to find nobody had stolen my scoob for the 1247th day running :p

That's funny. My silver scoob was sitting in the garage this morning when i got up, exactly where i have left it the night before :)

Dont forget they invest your money you give them so you have the return on approx £1000 invested per year too to count toward years when you claim...

Hi Big Guy, My scoob is parked outside my house at nights, the only trouble ive had in 1 years ownership is a couple of weeks ago my front headlights, sidelights and grill were stolen of my car. but other then that no trouble.

ii live out in the country but every time i approach the city i always lock my doors (while driving), not many of my mates undersatnd this but i read a thread on here a while ago about someone who did the same and it wasnt until some chancers tried to car jack him and that he knew locking the doors was a good idea otherwise he would have lost his car and not been able to speed off out of trouble like he did!

iam paranoid about such things but its peace of mind and hardly an effort!
