Non techie needs help

Trying to install Win 98 to a new hard drive on my laptop, (moving with the times !)

The boot disk loads the cd drivers ok, but when I try to run the setup from the cdrom, I'm told "drive c does not contain a valid FAT or FAT32 partition".

So I try to run "fdisk" from both a & c, but receive a "no fixed disks present" message. (but i can see other files extracted onto c:\ via dos)

Any ideas ?

(V simple instructions please ;))

when booting from a 9x CD i think it gives you a couple of drives.

c will probabily be the CD, but it could also be D

from c:\ type
dir fdisk*.* /s

this will give you the locations of fdisk on the cd.

then CD into the directory
and run fdisk

Create your partitions & reboot.

Then try formatting the partition (installer might do that for you)

and away you go

I've tried running fdisk from both a: & c: (deffo the HD) & still the same "no fixed disks present" message.

your CD WILL br mounted to a disk somewhere (if u booted with CD rom support)

tryed B & D?

Does the disk appear in the BIOS ok?

If so might be worth trying a FDISK -mbr to clear the master boot record. Failing that use a Partition Magic Boot disk to clear any partitions.
