just had an offer of a job £9 n hour 1st line support HP.

Got till 5 to decide finish BSc final year or take it........

£9 and hour - say a good 40hour week - £360 a week * 52 weeks = £18720

Less tax - about £1100 in your hand.

With the BSC - you'd still get the same for your first year but fastracked towards management.

All IMHO of course.


Any benefits - e.g. BUPA, Pension, Holidays ?

Also this depends where you live - north of scotland - go for it
South of england - would be a bit wary.

Ask em if you can finish your degree whilst working. Day release or something and see if you can finish your degree over more time, somewhat like OU degrees.

Whilst getting a job is nice, I would possibly question why someone abandoned a degree just before their final year (but that's me :))

A rather large telecommunications company I know just employed 15 new graduates from a pool of 750.
They will be earning in excess of 20k a year and after the first year guaranteed 10% pay increase [allegedly].
I would go for the degree [because I don't have one].

Given the fact that you are in your final year, I'd do as Hanslow said, ask if you can finish your degree whilst working.

However, if you had not started your degree, I'd say take the job. IMO, qualifications not mean jack without 'real world' experience.

Finish your degree. A friend of mine was on almost double that straight after graduating. You will be worth more with a degree than without.

agree with bob. i regret not going to uni. i had to do my BSc when i was 30 at night part time. working 5 days a week then out from 5 - 9pm at uni 2 nights a week get to you after a while. si, you know what letures are like m8. they give you the bare bones and you have to put the meat on them. 8 hours at uni meant at least another 8 hours of my precious time at home. stick with the degree, your earning potential will increase with a good degree.

Finish your degree. Once you get a job, you will move faster within the companies career path.

Don't skip the degree for a 1st line job... 1st line is essentially monkey work.

Agree with miles... ist line support you will work your as** off and never progress much further.. there are very few IT jobs these days that dont require a degree - i am an IT manager and we dont recruit anyone without a degree.. Some of the salaries people have mentioned seem a bit high for graduates - but in the long run it will benefit you as you should be able to progress faster.. With a degree you should be able to start on something in and around the 23-25k mark, i certainly did and that was a few years ago now.. god i feel old...

Aye, 1st line support is not a fun place IMHO.

However, I would offer that whilst a degree would well work for some sort of fast-track with a large corporate, it doesn't always carry the same weight at a smaller company. Be flexiable at the end of the day.
