Carbon Fibre Prop shafts

What do you chaps think of these

60% lighter than the stock steel, One piece eliminating the centre bearing, rated at 3000 Nm of torque & alot more gentle on your transmission due to carbon fibres shock absorbtion characteristics

If i had the spare pounds at the moment think i would invest

FASTER MIKE!! 08 September 2004 12:04 AM

any other advantage other than weight ereduction and strengh?:D

The Fixer 08 September 2004 12:42 PM

Power Loss through the transmission will be less due to not as much effort needed from the engine to get things turning.

Group Buy.......:D

On Grand Tourismo!!!:):):)

scooby-si 10 September 2004 03:52 AM

£840.00 tempting:D

David_Wallis 10 September 2004 09:14 AM

Thats cheap, I think I was looking at some that were £2000

I would be interested in some driveshafts though.

ALi-B 10 September 2004 09:54 AM

Forgive me for being a cynic....but.....

What bonds the carbon fibre to the steel UJ's ??

I have visons of after a bit of wear and tear, heat and a bit of oil contamination breaking down the bonding agent and the Prop will be spinning whilst the diff end UJ stays still!! ;) :D

SPEN555 10 September 2004 10:06 AM

What is the weight saving?

That alone could tip the scales?

At £840+VAT=£987 it could be tempting.

SPEN555 10 September 2004 10:11 AM

The website says 60% weight saving over OEM. Does anyone know what the OEM weighs?

They are based in Banbury so I wonder who they supply? ;)

P20SPD 10 September 2004 10:25 AM

A rough guess, having lifted a OEM prop shaft, would be 15 to 20kgs

Prodrive, apparently the rally cars have been thrashing round with them for ages & being rated at 3000 Nms should be pretty tough, The Uj's are bonded, but internally so contamination should not be an issue, Im sure if you did spin the Uj the companty would be so higly embarresed that you would have carbon fibre goodies for free for life,
Shall i enquire with my contact then, with regards to prices & numbers ordered ??

steven, you are very close with your guess, its 12.5kg

7.5kg's isn't a great amount of weight saving for the outlay in my opinion, the rotational velocity saving isn't going to be worth much either.

think it would be one of the last things on my list of worthwhile mods.

i could think of a few other things to spend £900 on before a carbon prop.

steve1380 03 October 2005 08:52 PM

chatting to the guys at WRC Technologies at Silverstone today, they have highly recommended the carbon prop shaft as my next upgrade, they have it for sale for about the same price. currently running 340bhp on my02 STI (high flow cat and 3" exhaust, uprated fuel pump, induction kit and remap)

They say changing it will be good for .4 sec of my 0-60 time!!

seriously considering it

harvey 03 October 2005 10:47 PM

So you believe them?????????????????? :Suspiciou

cong 04 October 2005 01:43 AM

il take two!.............one for my car and the other to hang the curtains in my bathroom! lovely carbon!

the Dark side 04 October 2005 03:14 PM

Steve, there are better things to spend £900 on that would get more than 0.4 seconds off your 1/4 mile, like a nice turbo upgrade getting you nearer to 400 HP :D

just thought id gauge interest in it... and it seems like its a bad idea, has no one had one put on then?

is an upgraded turbo the next point of call then, does anything else need to be changed?
