Thick BNC?

Hi

Following a power cut, a client has lost a spur off their network. It's an old inherited part of the network with what I think is called thick BNC, with a transceiver on each end which then connects to a hub using an AUI connector. One of the transceivers has gone down & I'm having big trouble sourcing another one. Can anyone suggest a source for old tech transceivers (I've tried Black Box) & what exactly is this thick BNC stuff called?

One of these...?

Dabs haven't got but there should be loads of people have them, Allied Telesyn would be the major manufacturer...

It's called 10-Base-5 and uses RG8 coax cable. God, I've not seen that stuff in years. Cut my teeth on that and it was even old technology when I started :)

Also known as Thick-Net (as apposed to Thin-Net). Crikey haven't heard of that in years.

Might be cheaper/easier to put in wireless ;)

Think yourself lucky you don't have to redo the termination ends. I was asked to do that with some hand-held crimping tools  I had forearms like popeye after it :D

Hank

Thanks for your help, but those ends are 10base2 or regular BNC connectors. The ones I need are at least twice as big as BNC!

Ozzy & Miles

I think you have it there guys, any idea who might sell old stuff like that? Looking in old catalogues, I can't find a thing!

The rest of the site has an optical fibre backbone - it's a sort of campus-type layout over 2km. I'd like to get fibre in for the link, but it's expensive for the customer & need to make sure that I can't get the other stuff.

Thanks
Nick

Nick,

is this the "original" yellow Ethernet, as thick as a hose pipe and with "vampire tap" tranceivers the size of a video cassette to connect directly to the cable?

LOL boomer - I was just about to post up about vampire clips :)

That's the ones! The transceivers are heavy metal things about 4" x 3". The cable is like yellow hose pipe - in fact that's what I call it!

No idea if distributors still stock them, but Allied Telesyn do (did?) all manner of obscure transcievers.

http://www.alliedtelesyn.co.uk/en-gb...?cid=14&fid=60 mentions vampire clips.

Try a couple of distributors on Monday (I'd probably start with Micro P), or maybe AT in the UK direct.

HTH,

Chris.
