Should I get a high performance car or modify a 'not so high' performance car?
 

A weird question that probably doesn't make much sense. I will explain...I was thinking of getting an Skoda Octavia 1.8T 4X4 Estate. Mainly due to the fact that they are relative cheap to get nearly new, relatively straight forward to tune and not liked by most people (due to the badge). However, from an Insurance point of view what would be better value or more sensible:

1. Unmodified Performance Estate?
2. Modified Skoda Octavia (As above)?


If the answer is 1. then what would you suggest being that I want to spend maximum £8000 and I do not want another old car the mileage has to be reasonable and the car cannot be too old.

The best thing about the Octavia is that you can get a relatively new one for around £8000 and will be quite low mileage. Also, I can 'Tune it as I go' so I can spread the cost a modify it to my personal preference but I am not sure what i would be looking at regards Insurance (I mean: Chipping, alloy wheel, uprated suspension, boost controller, turbo inlet pipe mods, Induction kit, uprated bushes and FMIC) up to around 280BHP that would probably do for me as my Legacy was max 260BHP (I know that's by most standards).

What do you guys think?

You wont get 280hp out of a standard Tavia without a turbo change for a start. For the money you are looking at the Skoda is probably the best car though and as you say easily tuneable.
