Difference with New Oil Filter

Can anyone tell me the difference in capacity between the old (bigger) oil filter and the new one which is quite smaller?

Smaller one is like the tardis or the wife’s handbag, capacity defies logic. Freaked me out the first time i got one out of the box.

I thought that bigger was always better for oil filters: More filtering capability and cooling.

could be that subaru realised the number of bearing failures related to oil change and have made the filter smaller to reduce the dry cranking time the bearings are exposed to if the subaru change procedure is not followed to the letter.
