Mac G4 broadband connection problem, HELP!
 

Been happily connected for three months but now it won't work and so far ISP can't sort it out. Uninstalled software and reinstalled but now the USB Modem does not appear as a Network Port so I can't re-enter my settings. Haven't changed anything else so really confused.

OSX 10.2.8
SpeedTouch 330 USB Modem (latest drivers downloaded and installed)
Wanadoo is the ISP

Wanadoo said something about USB chipsets, no idea what they are on about and how comes something that was working suddenly stops.

Can anyone help me here???

Ditch the USB and get a router.

I knew I'd get that reply. Really trying to avoid spending any more money right now, especially since this has been working fine to date. Modem shows two green lights for USB and ADSL so I think its OK, line has been checked and is fine.

Whats the best reasonably price Mac friendly easiest to set up router then.

Any router will work with your Mac, although some come with no instructions for OSX whatsoever :rolleyes: 99% of the time they are setup though a web interface anyway.

Are you sure its not something as simple as the USB cable being FUBARed? OSX would recognize the fact something was plugged in at least. Have you looked at the modems manufacturer website to see if there are any problems etc? Wanadoo and the ISP's are generally Mac blind and try to tell you anything to get you off the phone most of the time, but I think it will be the modem itself.

As above though, I think its about time you went to a router anyway, much better performance and reliability as its always on etc, (and you can get your XBOX on ;))

It is your modem no doubt about it. I struggled with this device after upgrading the OS (on a friends machine, oops) and it just would not work (although an identical setup did work on a PowerBook).

You could always run an earlier version of the OS - but this is not a sensible way forwards. You might persuade your ISP to replace the modem with any other type they may have, or ditch it and buy yourself a decent device (not one which has the ethernet gubbins the wrong end of a USB cable). My firm recommendation, by brand, would be Netgear (and steer clear of Draytek).

Setting up a truly OS X compatible modem is a matter of simply plugging it in.

Cheers, I suspect it is a cr*ppy modem but I guess I'm wasting my time persuading Wanadoo of this.

OK so router is probably the long term way to go, come on then, good deals at the moment, Mac friendly, user friendly kit.

Netgear DG834 is probably the way to go. Its predecessor won the MacUser award last year and we sell 50-60 weekly of these and people seem to insist on them by word of mouth. Certainly never had a dissatisfied Netgear DG834 customer. Seems to be a very Mac friendly very easy to set up piece of kit and one all our technical guys suggest first before anything else. Not very dear either.
