cold air home made kit on a 94 wrx ra...now with pics
i have just made a cold air kit for my r.a....i removed all the airbox,and pipes,refitted the air flow meter where the resonator box was,used the 90 degree bend that came of the original box,slotted a 3 inch piece of round tubing with a 75 degree bend in it so it angles down towards the chassis /inner wing..(about 40cm long).then drilled a number of holes just over 3 inches wide in between the chassis leg and the inner wing(the flat panel at the bottom where the intercooler water spray sits...when the hole was drilled pulled the surplus metal out the way,got a 15 cm piece of silicon cut it down the middle and put it round the hole that was cut,just to tidy it up...pushed the metal tube through the inner wing,so about 2 inches were sitting in the inner wheel arch..then took the drivers side wheel/arch of and fitted a length of 3 inch silicone on to the pipe under the wheel arch and then connected the cone filter,once it was all secured refitted the inner wheel arch sheild,so the filter is protected by rubbish from the road and then reffited wheel....after testing with this mod,it seems to work very well and the air filter noise is 3-4 times louder than when the cone was fitted in the engine bay...dont no why,the other thing is i have a forge d/valve and that has become crazy noise,sounds like the forge is in the air filter...lol::)))i think it needs setting up as when you are on hard boost it coughs a bit,i was thinking it is because there is a greater volume of cold dense air going through the intake>>i am running 1 bar with full decat..255 walboro and fse regulator????????any advise welcome..thanks nigel

Havent got any advice,but was impressed with the idea,especially the fact that the air filter is not in the engine compartment anymore.
Only thing I was wondering was,how do you stop excess crap from flying onto the induction filter? BTW,did the unblocking of the pipe make a difference to the boost/holding back? |
hi mate...the problem turned out to be the hose on the bottom of the intercooler the clip had come loose,so fixed this and seems fine now..(touching wood)..:):) well worth doing...thanks nigel

I could be wrong, but isn't the air pressure in the wheelarch at low pressure?

Where does it get its feed of air from in the wing ? is it as much as the engine bay ?
I like the idea tho, no heat from the engine. |
the filter sits in the drivers side wheel arch so its protected from the wheel spray,and it draws the air from under the indicator in the bumper..where the slats are ,just remove the piece of plastic behind the slats in the bumper....i have been on a run for twenty minsin the car ,pulled up and open the bonnet and felt the pipe from the air filter and its freezing cold...so it must work...in my opinion its a 15.00 pound mod that can only help...

Any pics mate - would like to see what it looks like as I'm setting a DIY job up with the intake, but keeping the filter in the bay and using a mini scoop to pull in more air, with an engine compartment separator to keep out hot air.

cheers rob...its oiled but it sits back further in the arch than it looks,so not much dirt/rain gets to it...who needs aquamist..lol...:)

Just found this thread and was wondering if you would need to remap?
I was thinking of doing something very similar but was told that the maf readings would be out. Have you have any running problems other than the initial loose pipe? |
A company called APS do a product which is very similar which locates the air filter in the inner arch, I've fitted to my scoob, it did need remapping after fitting - loads more cold air really confused the maf, made a real difference once mapped though – having said that the hybrid turbo, big injectors and FMIC certainly helps. ;)

I didn’t want to cut into the ducting that channels cold air to the brakes, as I didn’t want one brake cooler than the other, instead I've fitted a mini scoop to supply cold air. BUT.........It looks TOO exposed to the elements for my liking. Shouldn't imagine the filter will stay clean for long?? |
Cheers for the comments PICKLE - freshly washed prior to photo's being taken.
The pictures make the filter look like it could get wet - in fact the filter sit towards the front of the scoop and about 2inches back from the hole. I've checked the filter after washing and driving in rain and so far it's not got wet or shoud I say, it's not looked wet. Not sure how clean the filter will keep - only time will tell. madras |
