STi 8 for sale at great price

I have the opportunity to buy a STi 8 Type UK with 45k on the clock, full history, balance of Subaru warranty for the princely sum of 7k plus my 2001 Audi A4 T-Sport, with 67k in exchange (new shape), that's a chop in value of around 10k. What are you thoughts? I am racking my head, having owned a couple of impreza's over the last few years I'm dying to get back in the cockpit! Everything looks sweet, insurance is cool and funds to support the new purchase are available. One slight quandry, as we are looking to start a family in the near future, I am worried that the loss of additional income and inflated costs of owning a scoob and raising a nipper may be too much for the bank manager to handle. I know that if the brown stuff hit the fan, I would have to flog the scoob in a hurry, not convinced the market is lean enough on STi 8's to go that quick... Please help Jim, I know you can fix it! Yep, the guy who owned it previously was a salesman. He had enough courage to pop on an group N box too which means in terms of Mods, the car is ready to drive away to my simplistic requirements.:norty:

Eddie I think there are better deals out there. 45K sounds too high, there a quite a few out there going very cheap with a lot less miles!

I wouldn't want to spend that sort of money on a scoob with that high mileage. Just imagine, keep it for a year or two, it'll have 65k miles and be worth next to nothing. These cars are very mileage sensitive when priced, most people won't touch a scoob with high mileage cos u know it'll have had a hard life.

Thanks guys, as stated earlier, I really am after a version 8 (no offence to all the bug eyes out there). It sounds like a good deal to me and the only thing putting me off is the re-sale timescale. I'll have to accept a grand or two in residual, but it's actually selling the beast that could put a serious damper on things should the patter of tiny feet turn up at ANY time!

It is forest, but the dealer is willing to get it cleaned up and pushed through a main dealer 40 point check prior to sale.
In some ways I wish that the bloody thing would sell to somebody else, then it wouldn't come and haunt me every time I drive home from work and see that other bloke in the STi8 with a big cheesy grin as he pushes the boost that bit further... Lucky bar-steward...:cry: |
Don't let the high mileage put you off...I'm running an STi8 PPP, its got 43,000 on the clock and is nicely run in :D
In some ways high mileage can benefit the car, as long as its serviced regularly and properly, which mine has. That sort of mileage will indicate a lot of long runs so less chance of start-short trip at high speed-stop driving. Of course there is always the possibilty that its been mistreated, but AFAIAC its in my interest to ensure she's looked after. You still have the warranty and the checks the dealer should perform before the sale so I wouldn't worry about the car. Depending on the mileage you are likely to put on the car, it may be worth looking at the extended warranty and take that out before the 60,000 point. I'm not to well up on the current values, but don't dismiss the car just on the mileage...you may be able to bargin in the 50,000 service free :D |

I've run a WRX and STi, the former to 40,000 and the latter to 60,000 and they both became rattly piles of crap, the dealerships are a joke and when you go to trade them in you'll get peanuts. Keep searching for low mileage examples, there are plenty around. |
Interesting cross section of replies. To update, I am currently considering my options. By the way, anyone got any views on either the V6 4motion Golf or GT TDI version? OK, not the same motor by any means, but a lot less money and in the case of the TDI, nearly double the mpg....

In fact, my 53 plate sti8 has more cabin rattles than my my97 did.

There is no disputing that scoobs can endure high mileages easily if looked after, but the reality is that the PERCEPTION of most people means that they're generally put off by higher mileage cars. This means that buying a car with already high mileage for it's age is gonna have serious consequences on it's resale value.
Added to the fact that Eddie is especially concerned about resale-ability, I'd say that this would be a very bad idea. LC |

Sold my X plate UK turbo a few months ago with 87K on the clock. Never had anything go wrong with it in the 16 months of ownership or the 20 odd tho' mile i put on it..
just buy the extended warranty and enjoy :) :norty: :) |
