How can i tell fake Oakley's

Just been out for the day at shelsley walsh hill climb.
While there, watching the action, someone asked me if i had dropped my sunglasses. They had been dropped on the floor just behind me, so i hung them on the fence where i was standing. I was in the same spot for another 1hr 30mins, but no one came to claim them or showed any interest.

So how can i tell if they are a copy, which i presume they are.
There is a code DW-76 printed inside one arm.

Any clues:confused:

if you have a real pair it is easy to tell fakes as they aren't of the same quality. difficult to tell from a photo, but the lenses, hinges and frames should all be faultless.

J4CKO 15 August 2004 08:16 PM

Anyone in Manchester has them on, hats a sure fire way to tell.

greg.g 15 August 2004 08:20 PM

The lenses and frames seem ok.
The lenses are graduated from a smoked tone at the top ~ clearer tone at the bottom. Does the code DW-76 mean anything:confused:

Its the end of the arms where they fork that seems cheap:rolleyes:

I'm frightened to try them on in case i break out in a verse of " i just called to say i love you " in a steve wonder stylee:o

i've just had a look at mine and the only writing is on the inside of the arm where it says "E Wire 2.1" and then further down "CE" (product conformity mark).

Benidorm market ;)

If the lens is plastic - fake - glass -real

greg.g 15 August 2004 08:35 PM

On the other arm its got CAT.3 CE

greg.g 15 August 2004 08:38 PM

Is there an easy way to tell a plastic lens from a glass one.
I dont fancy trying to pop it out to see if it bends:(

gljam 15 August 2004 09:00 PM

I'm 99% sure they are fake :( Normally they will say oakley on the bridge, will have rubber grippers on the arms and the ends of the arms looks all wrong.
Oh and Oakleys don't use glass in any of their glasses, it's a plastic called plutonite;)

Thanks

I had already taken a look at the oakley website and could'nt see any arms like these.

Right, thats one pair of genuine oakleys going up for sale on ebay:rolleyes:;)

Normally fakes are in a colour that does not exist - easy way to find out!
just checked the Oakley site - definitely fake, no frames have arms like that

to tell glass from plastic tap the lens on your front tooth. if it is glass it will be a very prominent "ping". if plastic it will seem a dull thud.

need some better pics to be able to tell ( i have 8 pairs and can usually spot them a mile off)

Ive seen good fake frames, but never seen convincing lenses. the clairty is usually amazing,

They don't always have "Oakley" or "O" written on them these days. I've just bought a pair of X-Metal Romeos and they don't have anything written on them except "XMETAL" in really tiny letters on one of the lenses.

Those look like fakes to me though, just a gut feeling.
