Running in a diesel engine...
 

I'm getting a new diesel car at the beginning of September - what's the best way to run the engine in for the best performance and fuel economy in the future?

Keep it sitting just below the red line all the time :D

I assume the same principals apply, take it steady for the first few thousand miles, especially when it is cold. If it is a turbo then let the turbo cool down properly before turning off the engine.

Given the modern muck spreaders get better with miles and a good thrashing, I'd probably say...

Take it easy for the first 100 or so.
Get the oil nice 'n' warm and thrash the knackers off it in every gear :D

My smoke machine has got 32k on the clock and it's much better with the miles.

I picked mine up brand new in Munich with 5kms on the clock, then drove it home to Frankfurt approx 400km touching 180kmph a number of times. Seems to be working fine....its there to be driven :D

Treat it carefully just like any petrol engine. It needs running in properly just like any other engine fior exactly the same reasons.

It is still machined from metal and the machined surfaces need to get a polish on them like a petrol engine. It just has a different method of ignition to a petrol engine, otherwise the basic assembly is just the same, maybe a little heftier to allow for extra stresses from the diesel effect, that does not remove the need for running in.

mine used to run about 1.3 bar boost LMAO
was fast as **** :D. was a little bit smokey, but not to bad considering

mpg wasnt as good as it could be lol, put that down to the modded fuel pump :D

When running in the old transits I found that letting idling all the time, and chugging along using the torque rather than revs seemed to work well.

Put this way, two identical vans, well tell a lie, one was a high top both had the same engines:

The normal roof one wash thrashed
The hightop was mine and idled, and pootled along for the first 3-4K

The result after 50K was the low roof was gutless and could barely pull 70mph on the motorway. The hightop however, could pull a 4 wheel car trailer, laden with a Rover 420 diesel at 70mph.

Figure that one out! :D

If you want it quick then don't listen to everyone :D

My housemate has a new car every 3 months & abuses it something rotton - redline in every gear, revving (well as much as you can in a diesel lol)

It's so much faster than his work collegues who run thiers in :D
