How much power on standard sti injectors?

Looking for a bit of advice on this one.

I'm currently adding a few bits and pieces to my sti 5 and was wondering at what point the standard injectors would be maxed out. So far I've got

Sti air filter
Full decatted 3" blitz nur spec exhaust
Walbro 255 lph fuel pump anf fpr
and coming soon an apexi power fc

Will I be ok to run this setup with the standard injectors and if not what size would work best?

Any advice is appreciated.

You'll be OK until you change the turbo.

FASTER MIKE!! 05 August 2004 06:45 PM

john what size would you say if you changed the turbo to td05/06 for around 400hp

mike:)

Great minds think alike Mike.

Will probably be upgrading the turbo in the next few months also but didn't want to get too far ahead of myself in the original question.

stevebt 05 August 2004 09:34 PM

depends on wether your intercooler is top mount or front mount, top mount i run 440 injectors ok with td05, im only changing to 550's as im putting a td06 turbo on :)

john banks 05 August 2004 10:24 PM

550s at raised fuel pressure will just about do. Quite easy to max out if you go bonkers on a 20G and are limited on fuel pressure because of FSE regulator (max 5 bar absolute) and like to keep it on the rich side.

Fangoria 07 August 2004 05:13 PM

Depends also if you want to uprate again in the future. My personal preference would be for 740's allowing you plenty of room later on if you need it and the injectors are probably similarly priced. Idle will be a little richer though but nothing major

FASTER MIKE!! 07 August 2004 05:20 PM

so would you say 400hp(real) is atainable with an APS top mount and a td05/06 on a sti version 5 with 550's or 740's to make it safe. want to keep the top mount for stealth;):D

Fangoria 07 August 2004 06:45 PM

Maybe........... try it and see......... but wait until winter as you wont get that power right now!!!

On my last run at PS I only got 323bhp!! (running Optimax only).......with the 05/06......I got 383bhp in Winter with Optimax and a full bottle of NF at PS.......that was running a lot more mods than you would have though!!

Seems you need to run a small Turbo Inlet pipe to prevent surge on these Turbo's...........

i wouldnt say you would get anywhere near 400bhp with a TMIC, but you can run the tdo6 fine with 550 injectors and TMIC, i just put my car thru a R&R and my car was 50bhp less than a car with similar mods and a FMIC  i cant say i think there is much difference in acceleration IMHO but you would need the bigger injectors to cope with the power of the FMIC

Fangoria 07 August 2004 07:49 PM

But surely running a front mount just allows you to get colder air into the engine witha far more efficient intercooler.........and hence you can run more advance - yes more fuel but not sheds loads more.......

I have a front mount but its not enough - so I also have water injection (pressurised 3d mappable stuff.........)

Bestest mod for me now is to lose weight - cheapest way for bhp/tonnage!! ;)

Hmm - I wouldn't say that, Andy F's motor at a guess is running well over 400hp with a TMIC and achieved a 10.76s 1/4 at TOTBIII with this setup :D

Cheers

Fangoria 07 August 2004 10:06 PM

Yes a 2.33 Litre engine running a nice Turbo does achieve some nice performance

Boost does tend to come in nice and early as a consequence of backing of ignition advance to speed up that exhaust gas!!........ least thats the only way I can see that you can get a Turbo that size to spool up so quickly (even with those extra cc's) - nice result......... me thinks Andy will do somewhat better next yr- I just hope to join him once I've sorted my motor out!

john banks 07 August 2004 11:20 PM

His boost comes in nicely because of the hardware, not ignition retard. Whilst we were setting up the MAF conversion box even in the first miles on the new engine, the spool up didn't need any help. It was hilarious out the box :D

Fangoria 08 August 2004 12:16 AM

John

! - come on we all know the only way to get spool up that early is to eliminate most of the advance - common sense

But hey - fantastic result to the Scottish Possie

Errr no. Its flippin HUGE.

Saw it at TOTB and asked him what it was and where he got it but he said it was a home made one. It does the business anyway.

Steve, stop talking about things you don't understand  :D Where do you get this duff info from ?

Andy

FASTER MIKE!! 09 August 2004 09:07 PM

andy would you be willing to share:D what mods you've done to your car

mike fellow version 5 type r owner:D:D:D

Andy.F 09 August 2004 10:49 PM

2.2 std bore thickwall closed deck turbo block with piston sprays, 2.5 sti crank, CP forged pistons, Pauter steel rods, std Sti5 heads/cams, ARP studs, std intake manifold, custom built TMIC with twin cooling fans, HKS headers, GT30R turbo, scoobysport exhaust but with external wastegate. HKS flywheel and twin plate clutch, 850cc injectors, Apexi power FC, AVC-R.

Bats-Wrx 09 August 2004 10:59 PM

When or will the MAF conversion box be available????

john banks 09 August 2004 11:13 PM

If you can use a MAF, IMHO continue to do so, it is for many good reasons that virtually all OEM applications are now MAF based. Nearly everything can run a MAF if you use a smooth operating dump valve (eg the nice one Subaru provide) and don't have a ported shroud turbo (eg GT30R).

Andy.F 09 August 2004 11:20 PM

The conversion box is running fine but just needs more time mapping out transitions, there are a few odd circumstances on light throttle where it will still hiccup. As John said, the maf isn't such a bad thing really. Properly mounted and filtered they are reliable.

FASTER MIKE!! 09 August 2004 11:28 PM

cheers andy, quite a big spec there:D no wonder its running in the 10sec 1/4's braket:cool:

mike:)

Bats-Wrx 09 August 2004 11:34 PM

Just thinking ahead for when i find the right type-r for sale. I can't see it staying very standard. I would rather find one fully loaded to save me the hassle of uprating internals, big turbo etc...... but people tend to return them to a lower spec before parting with them :(.

Midlife...... 09 August 2004 11:42 PM

Faster.......when we see you at the next Sportsmans' meet will you be running the same :D :D :D

Fangoria 10 August 2004 10:31 PM

Andy

Yours has got a Pretty basic spec then for now :p - how much did it cost all in for the block/rods/pistons and crank (plus assembly, etc) ? - just going down that sort of route with Omega Pistons, arrow rods, etc will cost a fortune...... what sort of power would you expect to achieve? - are you gonna keep the gt30r or go bigger?

Yeah sure I know nothing...... but keep it quiet ;)

Its amazing the amount of info that floats around...................

FASTER MIKE!! 10 August 2004 10:55 PM

midlife won't be that spec yet need to clear my credit card(next month fingers crossed :D ) but it has the base for alot more power. would like to add headers, injectors, turbo and a remap to what i've already got;) that should get me near to the magic 400:D

mike:)

Midlife...... 10 August 2004 11:34 PM

Faster..... Just wondered what turbo you were thinking of ??

Nothing fancy Steve, I didn't have long to throw something together so I just got a short block from the USA, fully assembled for around £2k ($3500)
Just sticking with the small turbo as I love the quick response and it has 'adequate' top end power.

Andy
