Hi there,

Just a question for all you WR1 owners out there.

Any of you have a knocklink fitted yet ?

Just wondering how quiet or lively it is now the really hot weather is with us..

what's a knocklink ?

A device which shows you the amount of det the engine is suffering

....and why would you fit one to an unmodified car with a warrenty?

Unless of course you just HAD to spend some money on something for your car?

Knocklink detects det in ur engine.

Why wouldn't you want to fit one ?

A highly tuned car, mapped to the limit of the turbo etc etc...

A Nice idea....But what would you do if it was showing DET?

IM would prob tell you not to drive so hard in the hot weather....

Thought newage cars had quite advanced knock detectors as part of ecu?
Mind reading an article in Jap Performance about the capabilitys of stock ecu.

My STI (2003) has been getting DET in this hot weather (even though re-setting the ecu has retarded the ignition advance for a while, and I'm only getting one Green now).

The std ecu doesnt reduce boost in hot weather, the PPP fixes this by reducing boost when the maf sees air >30 degrees C.
Just something I've read.

Dont really see the point of a knocklink on a standard new impreza. If it blows up they will fix it free.

Probably sounds like a stupid question but I am a newbie.....what is DET please? I presume it is a bad thing?

It's when the air/fuel mixture detonates(goes bang) rather than burning in a controlled burn and pushing the piston down.
If the bang occurs way way before the piston is at top dead center when the piston is traveling upwards, then the resulting bang will hit the piston top and knock out the bearings or melt a piston.

That certainly seems to be the magic number, anything above 27 degrees on the thermometer readout means a power loss for me :( I'm just glad there is some good reason behind it :)

Just had mine in for loss of boost, MY03 PPP, as from standstill it wouldn't boost above 8PSI and I normally peak at 18.After maybe 30 seconds at a reasonable speed, the boost returned.

The dealer advised that as soon as the intake temp was above 40C, the ECU would reduce the boost. At standstill, with an outside temp of 30C, the temp peaked at 61C!!! Not sure which intake he was talking about, but it sure got hot under there.

Would you say that the fitting of a knocklink (unofficially) is a good idea/indication of whats happening under the bonnet?
I personally have one fitted to my MY03 JDM STi but i feel i require one more than a UK/Euro Spec STi ;)

I thought that there were two forms of uncontrolled burn.
1. Detonation
2. Pre-Ignition

Pre-Ignition being the burn cycle before the timed spark, and detonation after.

Not sure, am I completely wrong ?

You're not completely wrong Darren, but neither is Dipster (although you are possibly more right than he). :)

Both are caused by the air/fuel mixture spontaneously igniting, although det does usually occur after the spark. Simply put:

Pre-ignition is caused by the mixture burning before it is supposed to due to a hot-spot within the chamber. This can have the effect that Dipster described - the expanding gas pushing against the travel of the piston, rather than helping it on it's way.

Detonation is usually when the air/fuel mixture has been ignited and is expanding normally, when suddenly the expanding gas compresses the remaining, unburned fuel so much that it sponataneously explodes before the flame front actually causes it to burn normally (we're talking teeny-weeny time frames here!). The two flame fronts then meet each other with a bang.

had a knock link fitted to my Type R 5,

I bought the WR1 because it has a 3 year warranty so i dont give a damm if it Knocks, Blows up etc as its covered by the warranty !!

Why fit a knock link to a brand new scoob ??

Is it gonna explode at 100mph, sorry 70mph, down the motor way ?

does it gradually deteriorate, eg you damage it during your warranty but it doesn't explode until your warranty expires ? cos I'm damn sure thats what would happen to me ! :Suspiciou

or are the safety features built into the ecu enough in newage cars ?

come on folks we all know the STi5 blew up if you went over 125mph for a period of time, its wasnt made for high speed it was made for the sprint.

If you have a bad case of det (red light on Knocklink) as I did. I had a snapped conrod that went on to punch a hole in the block, twisted conrod, knackered crank and a piston that didn't look quite normal !!!! Don't worry the car is very very very far from standard and I had a somewhat large problem that caused the det.

There is no harm fitting anything to any car. Just because it is brand new with a warranty shouldn't matter. This man is obviously taking care of his new baby and at least if something does go wrong he can sort it faster having been warned. No one would want a brand new car blowing up irrespective of whether it has a warranty.

Without a knocklink, what are the warning signs, if any, to listen/look out for?

I find it funny that people say that it's under warranty so who cares. Think of the hassle and further problems of getting it fixed under warranty.Have you seen some of the techs at dealers!!!! A £30 grand 3 month old car with the engine being taken out striped and re-built. I would be gutted if that happend to me and would probably put me of the car. If i had £30 grand to spend on a car then whats another £150 on a knocklink unit + sensor. Just my opinion.
