oxygen sensor - help !

just had the check engine light come on on the motorway doin around 80. went off after around a minute after I slowed down.

I've connected the black plugs and its an error code 32, oxygen sensor. its a bog standard MY99. started car a few times since and no check engine light. is it something to worry about ? has it actually failed ? do i need to get it to a dealer asap ? what does the oxygen sensor do ? can i cause any damage running with the car as it is ?

(this is the first run the car has had in two weeks if that makes a difference).

if it needs replacing, ideas of dealer prices would be handy.

all advice appreciated.

cheers.

oxygen senser= lambda go to www.cats-direct.com get a universal one from there. but first find out if its a 3wire or 4 wire. i got mine from here yestaday next day delivery for £47 all in much cheaper than the dealers mate. hope that helps

Hi m8,

I had a similar experience - see thread

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=349301

I also hadn't used the car in two weeks (holiday) - I had different symptoms to you though, poor driveability and juddering.

Just changed the lambda (oxygen) sensor today for a universal one (£47 delivered) and hey presto, running perfect again.

The part from the dealer will be +£100 plus fitting. It's a relatively easy job to do yourself though.

I would use the car as little as possible until its fixed - a duff sensor will mess up your fuelling (the only time mine ran smooth was at full throttle when the info from the sensor is not used).

cheers guys.

a coupla quick questions - how do these things attach ? do I have to snip the existing wires and connect with spade connectors ?

are the wires the same colour ? lookin at that site, 2 of the wires are white. does it matter which way round they connect ?

(havent looked at car yet)

if its in the bottom of the downpipe, wont the sensor be a PITA to get out, moisture and heat dont normally make for an easy swap of anything.

cheers

ah, bollox to it. had a look underneath and would have to remove the undertray. dont have the equipment or inclination to be messin about like that these days, so looks like the dealer option for me...
