Radiator Fan not working
 

The radiator fan appears to no longer be activating on the car, my99 turbo.

How can i go about diagnosing this and how is the fan normally activated?

Both the top and bottom pipes of the radiator are hot. Checked both fuses and swapped Main Fan1 and Main Fan2 relays around.

Is there not a thermal control of some kind somewhere that i can short to see if the fan operates?

Where is the thermostat?

It could be a fuse (there could be more than one!), you will need to look in the owners handbook to see which one it is, if not then it will probably be the temp control or the likes, if this is the case then id suggest going to a dealer/speciallist :)

Seem to remember that the fans will spin as part of the diagnostic check when connecting up the green test plugs under the steering wheel?
That'll prove there is power to the fans.
If that works then connect up the black plugs:

As mentioned i have checked both 20A fuses and both appear to be ok.

As far as i can see the ECU kicks the fan in when it reaches a certain temp. Therfore obviously my temperature sensor is ok else i wouldn't see it in the dials. This is controlled via two relays in the fuse box, of which i have swapped but not completely eliminated.

I intent to wire the fan directly to the battery to see if it spins. Then short the relays.

If anyone know the above to be incorrect please can you tell me.

Reduce the temp via the laptop or the handheld tuning module the fans have been told to kick in at and see if they come in.

Dont have those tools at hand im afraid.

Have live wired the fan works ok. If i bridge Main FAN Relay1 the fan stays on all the time even with the ignition off. Have tried swapping the relays and it still doesnt work so taking that the relays are okay what sends the signal.

Is the readout on the dash from the same sensor that tells the ecu or are they different? I can see a spade type connector going into the top, under the alternator that i guess is related. Is there another independent sensor for the ecu?

Have been told that the whiteish plug behind that spade connector is the temp sender and there is only one.

The spade connector is for oil temp/pressure

Hi,

Haven't had this problem on my STI but i also own a Saab ( :freak3: as most do in turnip-land) where the fan stopped working. did all checks that you did and finally exchanged the temp.sensor (on the Saab, it is located on the radiator) which cost me ~7 UKP and it has been working since.

A trick is to lower the temp sensor down into boiling water (make sure that it does not touch the metal surface of whatever you dip it into). If it doesn't start the fan, then you know it's the sensor.
