Moving to London from Bristol - Advice needed!!

Ok......the Southwest Job market is dead (seems to have been for ages) for finance professionals....... so looking at London

Have just been offered a Director position based nr Farringdon...... and the wife can get a role nr there as well

We want to live somewhere that pretty much cuts out having to use the Tube.... just spent all day yesterday driving around the North bit of London,

Ideal would be to live in the countryside and commute in on an overground train to North London..........

So we ended up driving further andfurther out!!

Does anyone views on niceish areas to live which have an overground station into North London - I guess the most travelling we want to do is about 25-30 mins on a overground train

Anyone have a link to a network rail station/route map?..........

i.e. St Albans/Hemel Hempstead, etc do they have fast lines to St Pancreas/Farringdon?

If we went way out west to Amersham is it possible to get into a north side station from here etc, or areas around here. (might be a bit pricey though)

I also hear that St Pancreas is gonna be shut for ages soon - so I need to take this into account................

Any comments on commuting much appreciated

Dont think we looked at that one - is it on the East/North East side? - need to check

Ideally want to be I guess on the Northwest side..... plus its near friends and close relatives who live on the West side......

From memory, I think all routes from this location (east coast main line) go into Liverpool St.

Ahha
I now have a map of train services in the Southeast

Looking like St Albans as Thames Link has a direct service to Farringdon via st Pancreas

If I want to chose west I will come into Marlybone which aint so bad....... but not ideal............

Anyone know what St Albans is like - i.e. housing costs, insurance, crime rates, schools, etc?
