Can I withdraw an item if someone has put a bid in, still not met the reserve though?

As far as I'm aware, you can pull an item at any time, one of the reasons being "the item is no longer for sale".

For the bidder, it's tough sh1t really.

Sellers hold all the aces.

Andy's correct. Just cancel the bids and then cancel the auction. The eBay help tells you the best way to do it.
