Head Identification help

Please can anybody able to tell me how I can identify STi version 2 & 3 heads. The heads are off the car with no cam covers.

Anybody ?

I needed to know this a while ago. iirc it was to measure the cams profile.

STI 2 heads are hydraulic lifters and the 3's are solid lifters with shims

How can I tell if they are hydraulic lifters ?

Can you compress them ?

If they are Hydraulic there will be a gap between the follower and the camshaft (I think)
Non-hydraulic lifters are shimmed, so no gap :)

If you take a follower out it will have a groove around the middle if it's hydraulic

How do you measure the cam profile?

Also around the plug area the version 2 is shaped like a head with horns , the version 3 has a diamond shaped are . Hydraulic lifters have a hole in the sides to allow oil into the lifter
