any ideas?

got a 160gig samsung 7200rpm HDD from ALDI for £70 (good price).

your motherboard probably needs a bios update to pick up the bigger drives...

what os are you using?
remember in win 2k enabling biglba for drives over 137gb. (bout 128gb formatted i'd guess) just a reg entry i think.

what would scooby do

Yup - even on none Service pack XP you get this problem, install service packs or if on win2k do the registry entry as mentioned above.

did you delete & recreate partitions?

Some times the come with a smaller partition installed for testing.
