'Dead' sub has life again!!!!

Hi All,

Got a bit curious today as to why my Rockford sub(2115)suddenly gave up the ghost, so decided to take off the dust cap(very carefully) before it went in the bin(getting moaned at about it still being in the house ETC).

I was amazed to find that the solder that links the connection cables to the voice coil had completely MELTED resulting in the speaker not working, so I set about trying to repair it. Using some stranded cable, test meter, a gas soldering iron and some careful soldering i've now got a working sub again. Before sticking the dust cap back on i used a thinned down PVA adhesive where the dust cap was removed,to repair any little rips in the cone and some quick set epoxy glue for securing the connections back onto the speaker, then I stuck the dust cap back on with some Evo-stick impact adhesive.

I've just tried it and it works fine, don't know how long for but it will probably last until i've made my new box for my RE SX12 . So you can repair a sub afterall.

Good result! The norm is for the voice coil to heat and knacker itself, so perhaps the solder was deliberately lower rated to stop you from killing the voice coil?

All the same, a great result :D

Yeh, its taken the hammer today(Slipknot & Metallica ,don't come much heavier) the dust cap rattles a little and the Viper amp no longer cuts out on 1 ohm, so could the original solder been the cause of the amp cutting out?MMMMM

Dust cap flew off today, so not so good but still works without it.

Glue anyone???

Totally buggered it today, ripped it to bits, total mess so off to the local tip it went.
