Just washed my car for the first time since I picked it up last Saturday.
Used my little KEW HOBBY power washer that I used a hundred times on my old 5 door and guess what!
Tata black paint on the little black bits under the indicators in the front bumper!
A nice STI shade of orange underneath.
Has any other P1 boys suffered the same fait or do I really have Subaru`s biggest jinx?
Also hows the paint on the side skirts doing?
Stone chips?

This isn't confined to the P1. Just about everyone who has painted the orange inserts gets a similar problem. After reading some advice on this before, I gave mine a going over with a fine wire brush and then washed them in white spirit to get rid of any grease. Some primer designed for use with plastic, three coats of paint and two coats of laquer seems to have done the trick. They survive my turbo washer quite well.

just a quick note:
bests to de-grease with Denatured Alcohol (Methalated spirit) not white spirit, as it still has some grease in it! METHS has non so it evaporates away leaving no greasey film!!
I know all about it, studied it at college City & Guilds Painting and Decorating, as meths was always best to prepare/clean glass etc. B4 painting!

You seem to miss the point I HAV`NT sprayed them, the cars brand new.
When I spent my £34K on a new car I half expected the paint to stay on a bit longer than a week,Silly me eh!

ARRON,

You are not alone - the same thing happened to mine!!!

Front right - now can see orange paint!! Not happy!

Will be speaking to the dealer on Monday

ARRON BIRD 09 July 2000 10:28 PM

Tom, I reckon this will happen to all the P1`s.
Would`nt it have been easier to fabricate the correct black plastic instead of trying to paint the original?
What are your blue side skirty things looking like?
Not showing any signs of black through?
Again if other car manufacturers can make BLUE plastic why can`t Subaru?

Arron,

I spotted mine today !! Not happy - I was cleaning it (and I haven't used a jet wash on it) - and I thought there was an orange leaf or something - then like you realised it was under paint.

Re the runners etc - all look fine - the paintwork on the spoiler is not too good....in the P1 lettering...so will be mentioning that..

The exhaust is however excellent - but I am still a little pi$$ed by the fact that you pay £350 to upgrade and only then do you get an exhaust with the letters P & 1 embossed... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif....anyway c'est la vie huh??!!

ARRON BIRD 09 July 2000 10:44 PM

What the exhaust has P! on it? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Well at least they got that bit right.
How boomy is it inside the car?
Much louder than the other box?

Yea P1 on it!!!!!...amazing huh!!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Quite a bit louder inside...

sounds much better - excellent once you get cranked up the rev counter.

nice bit of popping as well, when changing down the gears...

All the best

Tom

I noticed what you describe on a P1 at one of the recent meets (Midlands or NW can't remember which).

I got Robinson's (Rochdale) to colour match my "wedges" when I first bought the car. I don't remember being charged for it. (Probably a mistake).

DBM MY00 bought in November 1999, jet washed a couple of times, winter roads over the Pennines. The paint is fine. Looks like the P1 team used a pot of "Airfix" Duck Egg Blue or something.

The job can be done properly.

DBM MY99 - Full colour coding.

(Only after I'd turned up to get my new car and had to mention that during the two weeks they'd had it they'd forgotten to colour code it!!!! A simple visual check against the invoice eh? LISTERS!!!!)

Anyway, sorry - 16K miles apart from some tiny flecks on my side-mirrors, everything is perfect.

Yup, you P1 boys have been stiffed...£34K+ ?
I'd have a little something to say!!!!!

Otis 11 July 2000 08:47 AM

Don't talk to me about ******* Listers!!
