Some MAF on MY99 help please
 

The Question:
Can I fit a MAF sensor myself?
Has anyone here done this job & how? It appears to need a special tool :-(


Some background:
I had my Impreza Turbo serviced last week and after telling them the car was 'stuttering' @4000rpm they diagnosed a faulty MAF sensor.

I asked them if it was safe to drive and they said yes no problem drive as normal. I rang the Subaru technical support line yesterday and they said don't drive it.

I would have thought the techinal support guys @ Subaru would be the authority which makes me concerned that I might have damaged my engine.

Looks like a five minute job to replace.....

You can test the MAF by doing the following -:

With the car at operating temperature, allow it to idle and disconnect the plug from the MAF sensor. The engine should stall. If the engine continues running with no great change in note, the MAF is probably failing.

Fitting is dead simple.

The sensor is held in the plastic housing by splined torx screws. If you don't have the correct tool, the small spline can be broken off and a normal torx driver will take it out.

It is retained by 2 screws and is a straight swap.

Dead simple.

where are you based? if you are local you can try my spare maf beofre parting company with your hard earned. although the maf on the 99/00 models is best considered a service item (once every 12 months!)

i changed my MAF on sunday. it cost 77 for the sensor from subaru. you need a "security torx T20" socket (get from halfords). takes 10 minutes to change it. you then do an ecu reset. then bob's your uncle.

Thanks for the spare MAF test offer (what nice people Scoobynetters are) but I bought the MAF today 77 quid all in.

BTW the Subaru dealer wanted 50 quid to fit it, I'm assuming they want to charge a whole hour regardless of how small a job fitting the part is.

I recall something about ECU reset, battery off for 20 mins?

Should do it. There is another method involving connecting two plugs under the steering column. Do a search for info :)

Do not drive it hard until you have changed the MAF.
