Air con

How big a job is it to install air con in an Impreza? I'm not going to atempt it, would I need to go to a dealer or could I get it done some where else?

Jolly Green Monster 06 July 2004 04:31 PM

Friend bought a car from the dealer and had them install air con.. about £1400 iirc.. how much!!

I have compressor and exchanger for sale if it is a help.. already sold the rad.

I think you can get it installed by an air con speciallise for less than the dealer charges..

Cheers mate, I have all the bits and pieces just need someone to do the work.

Try your yellow pages or www.yell.co.uk not sure what they would be listed under though.. I suspect the dealer gets a local speciallist in to do it anyway.

It took me half a day to fit mine (never done it before).
It's very simple & not far off plug & play !!!

Hi,

I am thinking of fitting a/c to my late 1997 Sport and I know someone who has the parts from a JDM Turbo (1993 I think).

The fitting instructions look straight forward but I am not sure if this unit will fit. I am worried that parts like the condensor, evaporator and compressor might have different mountings and stuff like that.

Does anyone know if it is likely to be a problem ?

Also. Is it safe to fit the air con and then drive the car before it has been gassed and oiled ? Or is it better to leave the compressor belt disconnected ?

Thanks.

its not a straight fit to jap air con to uk car as they are electronic controlled!
uk for uk is easy!
except evaporator fitting
you also cannot fit 1993 parts to late 97 specially if yours is later dash.
there are some supple differences between sport , but unsure of total differences , may only be belt .
better of getting parts from same year model!

once parts fitted (from correct donor car) you do not need to oil and gas straight away as compressor will not pull in with no gas in!

i fitted air con to my MY2000

If any one wants hand fitting , i can help
then gas up for you after! :)

getting warmer weather soon

Thanks for the advice Silver Sonic. I was also looking at a USA parts list for the various MYs and that was why I was thinking it might not be a straight fit.

My car is a late 1997 with the pre-facelift interior but it has slider controls for the recirc which is different to the 1996 I do know.

I wouldn't have thought the Turbo and Sport would differ much in heating and ventilation for the same model years.

Is the wiring likely to differ much ? I was more worried about the mecahnical parts not fitting the mounting points. It's not like it is a climate control system, I thought it was just an on-off air con ?

Anyone got a 1997 a/c system ?

wiring is likely to be same and mechanical mounting points.
but pipe sizes do vary from year to year .
air con is on/off as you say but japs are electronic like climate control,
heater controls are by wire on uk . electronic on jap.
jap belt pulley bracket and idler pulley assy differ.
best thing to do is try to get same year and model for parts.
fitting instructions do not indicate any major difference .

Thanks for that. You have saved me a lot of hair pulling.

I'll try to find a 1997 unit.
