Nokia "insert SIM card" / "number not recognised"
 

Wife's Nokia 3310 is giving an "insert SIM card" message every now and then. It's a pain.

What's more of a pain is, when you ring it, instead of getting "This phone is switched off or unavailable", you get "This number is not recognised. You have misdialled. Please check the number and try again."

Any suggestions? We gave the card a brief polish in case it was the contacts, which would explain the former, but we're mystified by the latter.

mine started doing this on Friday - ordered a new phone and card today, cos other sims work in the phone, and the sim works in another phone :confused:

My Nokia 6100 started doing this a few days ago. Constantly losing network signal and then the Insert SIM message. I can only clear it by removing the battery and then SIM and then leaving them apart for a few minutes :(

I really need to speak to O2 as its still under warranty.

Who is your provider? Is the Network Signal strong?

mine is 02 as well - I called them today and they told me they couldn't do anything cos their systems were down. Called later - same story - takes about an hour to get through. Called sales ( answered in a couple of minutes) and ordered a new phone

my v old nokia 7110e was doing this a lot a while ago.

orange tech supp said try a different battery which did actually solve the problem.

now the only prob i got is neither battery i got wants to accept a charge !

luckily though my nice shiny new SE K700i arrived on Friday so i'm in process of trying to work out how to move all my numbers etc from old phone / sim to new phone / sim.

Do your callers also get the "wrong number" message when this happens?

We've bought one new battery for it already.

I'd like to hang on to the phone as long as possible, partly as I'm tight :), and partly as as soon as she gets a new one, our teenager will not let us hear the last of it ("how come she gets a new one and I don't??"). Not on contract, so a new phone will be a lot more than a ten quid upgrade.

Brendan, my wife's 3330 did exactly the same. Tried everything to sort it as did the Vodafone shop but it still carried on intermittently. In the end because she needs it for her work she bought a new phone - not a Nokia

p.s. get a contract, just got a t630 for £20 and a free tarrif upgrade to 100 min/month for £15 all in.

Update - we couldn't find the receipt for the last (NiMH) battery, only bought this year, so went for another. The shop tried a new NiMH battery - same thing. Tried a new Li-Ion one - no problem. Bought it, took it home. After a day, incoming callers would hear the "number busy" tone, she wouldn't know anyone was calling. Then it started giving out the "this number is not correct" message. Took it back to the shop again. They fiddled with it, and it seems fine now. (She asked what was wrong, and was told but didn't understand the answer.) We'll certainly keep the receipt for this battery.

I quickly spreadsheeted (spreadshat?) contract vs PAYG costs, to see if we should get one. A contract, on the terms offered here, will cost us over 100 euros a year MORE than PAYG, even including the discount that they offer on buying a new phone. So no interest in getting one of them then.

If you have problems with your Nokia then first try to get the phone re-flashed and/or flash upgraded and set back to factory default and see if it makes a difference.

You'll be able to see the current software version in the phone by typing *#0000#.

Other than that, avoid Nokia phones. The 6310i is probably the only half decent phone that Nokia last produced.

I assume you've tried cleaning the contacts on the SIM card with an eraser (or if that fails, some alcohol -- not beer obviously ;))
