GEMS

Got it installed yesterday and all i can say is AntiLag is the worlds gretest invention for giving the old biddies severe heart failure

Getting it remapped next week so no major load on the engine but sitting at the traffic lights and give it a wee dab on the LOUD peddle.AWESOME

Obtained a set of STI 550 injectors.1995 Prodrive WRC downpipe,Irish Tarmac spec exhaust,Prodrive Idle valve and a VF28 from a STI5

Will be at it hardcore, after i get back from the JC,to fit it all before the remap.

Spec to date

STI 95 Closed deck block
STI 4.1-1 ratio gearbox with electric adjustable centre diff(Need dash display and loom to complete)
GEMS managment with AntiLag
STI Alloy Intercooler with Waterspray
Walbro 255lph fuel pump
FSE Fuel pressure regulator
K&N 57i Air filter
NO Dumpvalve whatsoever
HKS Competition Decat Full system
NGK PFR7B Plugs
Aircon removed
Apexi strutbrace

To be added

STI 550cc injectors
WRC downpipe
VF28 Turbo
Irish Tarmac spec downpipe back exhaust

Interior

6point Rollcage
Cobra Daytona seats
Boost Guage
Knocklink
AFR meter
Greddy Turbo Timer
Central Locking removed
Rear seats, all unneccessery interior/boot trim and speakers removed

After the remap ill get her up to Star/Dastek for a Rolling road session
and down to the local scrap metal dealer to wiegh her . :)

Plans for the remap to run on Opti, run a good bit of whoosh in the mid and very little at the top,1.5bar between 3000rpm and 5200rpm then tailing off at the top end to half a bar.So top end power will be low but aiming for a good torque figure in the midrange.I want the GEMS to fire the waterspray if the charge gets too high

When you hear the Irish cars at the Jim Clark Rally you will understand why i went for this particular exhaust system

Future plans are for a Front mount Intercooler,Headers and an uprated clutch
If my beautiful understanding girlfriend Imy allows ..... ;)

Are you running a turbo inlet restrictor for competition purposes?

sti-spec-a 02 July 2004 06:37 PM

The ECU was mapped for a 34mm restrictor, will run out of puff at 5000rpm and mapped for AGP 102 fuel,i running her on Opti + 2 bottles of Millers per full tank In the short term i have fitted the restrictor and i am not putting any major load on the engine

The restrictor is there at the moment but will be removed when the ECU is remapped and its for road use not competition use

john banks 02 July 2004 06:47 PM

If not using a restrictor why uprate the fuel system and then run less than standard top end power for a 95 STi (if that is what your car is) in the form of 0.5 bar on a turbo that flows less (due to smaller compressor and turbine wheels) than the standard one (TD05-16G)?

sti-spec-a 02 July 2004 07:02 PM

Im looking for a good punch in the midrange for accelaration purposes because top speed doesnt interest me,to dependant on license for work purposes and i got the VF28 for a good price along with the injectors I believe the turbo is from an Ver5 and will spool slightly earlier than the TDo5 i currently have, for off ALS purposes

I honestly dont know if my car is a STI The logbook says WRX but the susp, gearbox, dash, waterspray, intercooler and engine were all STI when i bought the car

With this overall setup i could probably reach 300 maybe 350 brake but i want TORQUE lots of it If the mapper can get a good bhp figure then fair enough but i want rid of the boost at the top end as not to put too much strain on the Rods Saying that the N10 rods are peanuts at the mo

Hope this makes sense

sti-spec-a 02 July 2004 07:06 PM

Plus one of the first things i was told was the std WRX pump and regulator were not that good So they were the first thing that i changed

Grant

john banks 02 July 2004 10:51 PM

There is virtually nothing in it for spool up between a VF28 and TD05. Both hit 1 bar at about 2700-2800 on the OEM exhaust manifold.

Revs will kill the rods not torque, the forces in tension are higher than those from compression for the sort of torque you will be running. Sweet spot is about 1.2 bar at 6000 and 1.0 bar at 7000 RPM for either turbo, 0.5 bar at the top is throwing away flexibility for no good reason, the internals are happy at 1 bar at the top. You'll just make it feel like a turbodiesel with a narrower than normal power band.

You'll put far more stress on your gaskets, joints and turbo from running ALS to support an all too brief mid range because you've truncated the power band than you will from running a sensible midrange-topend balance.

Acceleration will depend on average power put down.

Controlling the speed to avoid losing the license is far more related to torque.

Trashing gearboxes is related to torque.

If you don't have an STi gearbox you'll probably trash it with 1.5 bar.

A few things to consider.

Andy.F 02 July 2004 10:57 PM

Anti-lag will kill a std VF turbo quickly too  .....something else to consider !

moses 03 July 2004 03:32 PM

sounds awesome mate, congrats :)

and andy is right, anti lag will cook your turbo mate

sti-spec-a 03 July 2004 09:24 PM

John your info and input are invaluble.I appreciate any advise or thoughts please

Are you saying it will be best to go for a good midrange tailing off to 1.2bar @ 6000rpm then down to 1.0 @ 7000rpm,is the GEMS this adaptable and keep the stock td05,how are the TD05 at coping with Antilag? If poor what turbo would you recommend
Would selling the VF28 and going for a VF34 be a better idea?or buy a T7 from the States for £300 ......... or source a TD05/06 from Mr F ...... :)

Went to the Jim Clark today,astounded,160miles from Glasgow to Berwick upon Tweed at a 70mph average on a MAP supposedly for a rally car £15.73 in Opti It makes me think the more i have this ECU the more i think its running a stock base MAP for an EJ20 engine WRX 93-96 Had to give the car a bit of what for between stages,1.2,1.3bar,Dawes AFR was solid blue and 1 green on the Knocklink This was on Opti alone as no Booster available and the ECU was supposedly mapped for AGP 102 ....... hmmmmm Mr Simpson
Tomorrow we are removing the restrictor to see the results if she leans out, fitted a Bosch wideband sensor last week,or Dets then fair enough, itismapped for restrictor and big bang fuel but if she shows no sign of leaning or detting then a wee call to Mr Simpson will be on the cards

I know the Apexi Power FC starts off with a base map to get the engine running and you adjust the parameters to gain more power, torque, drivability etc Is this the same with GEMS?

AndyF i know your prowess with the Apexi unit is now reaching legendery status but how are you at reprogramming the GEMS ECU

Grant

john banks 03 July 2004 10:17 PM

If you want a torquey turbo that is more likely to stand up to antilag and be more likely to be able to be rebuilt if it does pop, stick with the TD05.

Your GEMS can easily handle RPM mapped boost control.

From the Group N Subaru map I saw it will not be economical for cruising if you have anything like this.... overrun will be full of overfuelling and retard for a start.

For all ECUs you start with a base map and adjust from there.

I'm sure Steve will have no problem delivering what you want from the car if you tell him clearly what you want.

The suggested boost map is a good start for your setup. Run the midrange that your gearbox and engine tolerates (weighing up temperatures, detonation, octane), and then 1.2 at 6000 RPM is a good place to start.

john banks 03 July 2004 10:28 PM

If your rev limit is adequate and your gearing short enough you can make good use of lower torque to give the same net torquey feeling by using more revs. Torque at the wheels for a given road speed is what accelerates you.

This is why an M3 or a VTEC Honda both with only modest torque can give good in gear times.

za-sti 05 July 2004 05:02 PM

good to hear you got it installed Grant, two comments to make on what you said

- 2 bottles of Millers will not help as my understanding is that it will only raise the RON once - can anyone else confirm

- dont rely on the Knocklink too much as my car was detting but not showing on the link

otherwise sounds like you have a tasty motor.

Cheers
za

sti-spec-a 05 July 2004 06:40 PM

I took the restrictor out yesterday There wasnt much difference No more Kangaroo petrol at low revs and and the AFR is a green/blue on load all the way up the rev range in third and fourth 1 green on Knocklink No hesitating or pops and bangs on the overun AFR switches off till load is applied Also the hot start has dramatically improved previously it was a mare to start when hot

I believe the GEMS is running a base map for my phase of scoob with most of the adjusting done to the ALS map The car it came from did 3 rallies with this ECU in its current form supposedly mapped for 102ron and restrictor Its now in my car on Opti alone with no restrictor, for next 3 days then its getting remapped,so when i show my car to the ECUs previous owner he will be a bit miffed i think because he ran the rally car on 102ron racing fuel which isnt cheap

I had a slight problem when i fire the ALS the air con fan wiring is melting ..... Hmmmm
Remove the rest of the Aircon wiring to be added to the list

John you refer to seeing a map for a Grp N Subaru saying that it wouldnt be "Economical for cruising if you have anything like this".Please refer to what i said about getting from Glasgow to Berwick upon Tweed.160 miles for £16 of Optimax thats the best fuel consumption i have ever seen in a Subaru Turbo

Only 3 days till remap and i will stick with the TD05 till it goes bang then look to the States for a good replacment

Za Sti My KL is located where the factory sensor is for a better signal but again i dont put all my eggs into this basket ......... :)
