How do I remove gear knob from Golf Mk4?

How do I remove the gear knob from a golf mk4?

I've tried the usual unscrew with reasonable force but it's not budging!

There must be a knack, can anyone help?

erm i cut mine off when i had my golf two years back, try twisting and pulling up at the same time.
